side effects of drug atenolol? on the pancreas

Vytorin2004 replied: "Atenolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers reduce the workload on the heart and help it to beat more regularly. Atenolol controls, but does not cure, high blood pressure (hypertension). Atenolol also relieves chest pain (angina), and can be helpful after a heart attack. Sometimes atenolol is used to help prevent migraine headaches. Generic atenolol tablets are available. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: •changes in vision •cold, tingling, or numb hands or feet •confusion •difficulty breathing, wheezing •dizziness or fainting spells •increased thirst •increase in the amount of urine passed •irregular heartbeat •skin rash •slow heart rate (fewer than recommended by your prescriber or health care professional) •sweating •swollen legs or ankles •tremor, shakes •vomiting •weight loss Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): •anxiety •depression, nightmares •diarrhea •difficulty sleeping •dry itching skin •dry or burning eyes •headache •nausea •sexual difficulties, impotence •unusual tiredness"

How long do side effects from Atenolol (a beta blocker) last? My husband was just started on Atenolol 50mg for Vasovagal Syncope, and is having reactions like diahrea, nausea, tiredness, dry eyes, etc. It says on the pamphlet these may occur, but it is enough to get him sent home from work. Does anyone have any info on this drug? Thanks!!

•• TONY •• replied: "Hello there, I have been taking Atenolol every day for the last 12 years since I had my first angioplasty. Luckily, I have had no side effects whatsoever. However, I was told at the time I was first prescribed it, that if I had any problems to let them know and they would give me an alternative beta blocker. Apparently there are several different drugs that can be used instead of Atenolol. Just ask your husband's cardiologist to put him on a different beta blocker.."

John N replied: "yeah, there are a lot of beta blockers out there, and they're not all the same. I don't tolerate some of them. He needs to see his doc and try a different one."

Switching from atenolol to propranolol ER? I've been taking atenolol, 25 mg/day, for 3 years for anxiety, tachycardia and PVCs. I've been experiencing a resurgence of PVCs lately, and today my doctor gave me a prescription for Inderal LA. Is Inderal effective for these kinds of problems that I have? I've been researching since I got home, but I haven't found any good info about the drug. Also worried about side effects since I haven't really had any that I've noticed on atenolol.

xih8ux replied: "Here is a website that I use a lot to check out new medicines. Maybe it can help you answer your questions."

Corrine B replied: "How old are may I ask? I'm 24 and am new to all of this, I'm a cardiac critical care nurse actually and lately I have been having tachycardia that puts me in the 150's resting. I'm on metoprolol XL 12.5 mg and I have yet to have seen a cardiologist, this is what the er doc put me on.Are we allowed to drink alcohol on these cardiac meds?/"

? replied: "Nothing to worry about, LA means Long Acting. Both are beta blockers. Inderal LA is a good drug of choice in PVC. Both of them decrease cardiac rate.Yes it can be given in your condition. All the best."

Has anyone here had any experience with a prescribed drug called Paxil?Your side effects? Is this normal?? I was prescribed Paxil the other day with some blood pressure medication (Atenolol 50mg) and i took one pill 30mg of the Paxil and i thought i was gonna pass out.I ended up sleeping for 15 hours and i could feel there wasnt something right in my head.I actually thought i was gonna go crazy!! My dreams didnt even seem right.I havent taken anymore of it.What do you think??Is this normal? Thanks.

mylo101 replied: "Paxil does have some serious side effects, if they aren't making you feel right then I would call your doctor and talk to him about getting you on something different. It could have also mixed with your BP meds...so I would definatly discontinue the paxil until you meet with your doctor."

Jane C replied: "I've been on Paxil for some years now do to a panic disorder I developed from Graves disease..(a thyroid condition) And it's worked wonders for me. I believe that the combination of both meds is probably the problem. Ask your doctor to change your blood pressure medicine. I was on a blood pressure medicine... I don't remember the name but, it wasn't atenolol. Although, I no longer take the bp meds, I didn't have the problems you're experiencing. Paxil is really a good medicine and one thing that sticks out is... paxil takes more than one pill to get in your system it takes about a week... so I don't think it was the paxil."

sadiemae replied: "I've been taking Paxil for yrs. I've tried so many other antidepressants in the past. It made me very tired when I first started. You have to take it for at least a month to see any results. It's a new drug for you, so your body has to get used to it. Please, take them as prescribed. Or if you are in doubt, ask your doc. Good luck :-)"

adsnell2004 replied: "I took paxil for two months and it did very little for me. for acute anxiety it should work fine"

Using Atenolol(Tenormin) 25mg for social phobia? I am suffering from social phobia. I face it in every day to day function in my life such as meeting with team, taking lunch with them etc. I have started using Atenolol (The Beta Blocker)/ Tenormin 25 mg for such situations. However, I am not using it daily. My Questions: a) Would it be OK if I use it once or twice a week depending on the events coming up (meetings, presentations etc.) or should I be using it daily? b) For bigger presentations, 25mg doesn't look sufficient as I am still having shivering voice problem. In this case, would it be OK to use 40mg 1 hr before presentation? c) I am fearing that I might get addicted to this thing and have a dependency on it for the rest of my life. Because this drug has side effects, I would like to know if there is anyother good one that can help me in completely overcoming my social anxiety problem? PS: I've tried Alprazolam 25mg, St Johns wort, etc etc but none of them seemed to work. So I started the beta blocker tenormin as last option. I would be grateful if someone can help me overcome this problem and make my daily competitive life much easier and tension free. Thanks in advance. Kumar

reneem1954_2000 replied: "I use Atonal ol for high blood pressure.! I have social problems too. There are many out there for the problem. All of them have a degree of side effects. i use effexor xr I used it for two years. I had a few minor side effects the first few weeks, like light headiness and dry mouth. Once it got in my system.(about 3 weeks) I began to feel better. I took therapy too and after two years my doctor took me off them (weaned me off) My blood pressure even went down and no longer need either."

What's the fuss with Atenolol? Some doctors are strongly advising me to disconue it...? On the basis that it ruins the kidneys and may cause long term damage to the internal organs. Is it true? If so, why is it still the most popular drug in the market and what do health experts have to say about this? If so, don't you think that all those major producers of Atenolol have gone bankrupted by now from the result of consumer protests and health department's disapproval of the medicine? Some doctors recommended that a combined dosage with HCT will minimize the risk of side effects.

gangadharan_nair replied: "Atenolol is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. It also is used to prevent angina (chest pain) and treat heart attacks. Atenolol is in a class of medications called beta blockers. It works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard. Whilst atenolol, the most widely used beta-blocker in the United Kingdom, was once first-line treatment for hypertension, the role for beta-blockers in hypertension was downgraded in June 2006 in the United Kingdom to fourth-line as they perform less well than other drugs, particularly in the elderly, and there is increasing evidence that the most frequently used beta-blockers at usual doses carry an unacceptable risk of provoking type 2 diabetes Hydrochlorothiazide, a 'water pill,' is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention caused by various conditions, including heart disease. It causes the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine. Please see the web pages for more details on Atenolol and Hydrochlorothiazide (HCT)."

angel beth replied: "I have no idea what to say here Good luck on this Bear!!!!!!"

Vik V replied: "Atenolol tablets, Atenolol LS tablets, Atenolol syrup and Atenolol injection contain the active ingredient atenolol, which is a type of medicine called a beta-blocker. (NB. Atenolol is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.) Beta-blockers work by blocking beta receptors that are found in various parts of the body. Blocking beta receptors prevents the action of two chemicals, called noradrenaline and adrenaline, which are produced naturally by the body. These are often referred to as the 'fight or flight' chemicals, because they are responsible for the body's reaction to stressful situations."

Can you take decongestants with the following drugs - Amlodipine, Atenolol, Conversyl? These drugs are taken for high blood pressure and i would like to know if using decongestants will have any side-effects. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

B G replied: "Call the pharmacy or hospital that you got these drugs from. They may ask that you see the doctor. Decongestants interract with a LOT of drugs, and I am not familiar with the drugs you mentioned."

ginny r replied: "Some decongestants raise blood pressure so would be unwise to take with your antihypertensive drugs. Ask your doctor or if you are going to use an OTC, ask the pharmacist who can advise you. Pharmacists know more about drugs and interactions than physicians."

How long should I wait before complaining to my doctor about a new medication? I just started taking Atenolol this morning and I've been feeling very fatigued and drowsy all day. At first I seem to have some difficulty breathing, but that seems to have subsiding after I took a long nap. How long should I allow my body to get used this new drug before complaining of side effects to my doctor?

Andrew C replied: "Right away you should call your doctor maybe those side effects are diffrent then they should be"

chris replied: "let them know right away"

cpocollins replied: "You should notify your doctor immediately. Reactions to meds can be very serious, and what you describe needs to be addressed right away. I also suggest that you look this med up on the internet and check out potential side effects and what to do about them."

are there any chat lines or support groups on line for heart surgery patients? I recently , as of 3 months ago had my mitral valve repaired via a minimal invasive surgery procedure. I am still on the drug Warfarin and Atenolol untill the cardiologist sorts out my irregular heart beat , it could be side effects from the drugs in which case once I am weaned of the drugs and my body has time to reajust things could get back to normal otherwise I may need a pace maker, I am told by my Doctor. I am looking for a support group to ask some questions. Does anyone out there know someone who has had the same procedure who I can have a few words with. Or are there any support groups out there that I can contact.

husky replied: "i have a pacemaker and work in er. e-mail me with questions."

Loving_Heart replied: "I will recommend you this link , as it contains all you need to know, meanwhile go for the pace maker if your cardiologist deems it necessary."
