30 yr. old with back hip pain? im 30 yr old with ongoing back/hip pain i just finished a round of prednisone wich help while i took it but now the pain is back i also have a c reactive protien level of 36.8 wich is high. i have had blood tests and xrays done and have found nothing. does anyone have any advise on what this could be or what i could do for it? it is deep bone pain the kind you feel like you cant reach to massage out

Doug L replied: "is it a muscular pain or a nerve pain? Pinched nerves are common. I had one and adjusted my posture and watched my weight and exercised more. If its muscular, working the abdominals might help."

NvrMnd smart1 its over ur head replied: "Don't feel bad. I'm 20 and have had massive hip pain since I as 15. I got used to it because the Dr's told me they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and I could either take pain pills every day, or let them cut me open to see what's wrong. I chose option 3 - deal with it. You get used to it over time"

smiley_face_boxers replied: "Quit wearing those tight @$$ jeans, because they are pressing your hip bones into each other, and causing you offset, excrutiating pain. Men usually have a similar reaction and pain from sitting on a fat wallet all day. Take the wallet out, and the pain will usually subside in a couple of days. Look to the obvious things first. ;)"

Richard C replied: "The answer to your problem might be with a visit to a physical therapist. The problem you are describing could be a simple thing, a rotation of the pelvis. This sounds much worse than it is and should only take a visit or two for a correction. They should teach you how to self correct this problem and it would be taken care of. They should look at your posture and see if there are structural problems that might be bringing this on or if it is strictly muscular. If it is a muscular problem then you will have to work on correcting the imbalance. This is usually from a combination of tight and weak hip flexors and hamstrings. If there is more information that could have been given a more specific address could have been done. You don't say which side it is that is bothering you or if it is across the entire back. There is no information as to whether or not you are on birth control medications. How active are you and if you are active what do you do? What kind of shoes are you wearing and how much standing is done? When you get pants hemmed is one leg slightly longer than the other? How old is your mattress and do you sleep only on one side? There is a lot of information that has to be taken into account when doing an evaluation for it is the patient that gives the clues to the problem more often than the tests. Good luck!"

Short-term prednisone use in dogs ...? Has anyone ever heard of Prednisone being used short term (5 days) on a dog to alleviate problems caused by arthritis and hip dysplasia (pain management)? Has it worked? I always thought Prednisone, if at all, needs to be given longer than just a few days. It would be great to hear from people who've actually gone through this. Thank you :) Also: My 15 year old lab mix is running out of options for his arthritis. I'm just trying to gather info on how to help him. He's got a great spirit still, but his legs have become wobbly and he stumbles a bit. I know what this means, I'm just trying to keep him comfy for as long as possible. Right now he's on Adequan and Previcox ... I'm not sure there's anything left but Prednisone (which personally, I'd rather not give). Thanks. Grinninh: Actually he is on NSAIDs. He is on Previcox. He used to be on Deramaxx but had complications after a year and we switched him to Previcox. He's also on Adequan, which I understand to be even better than glucosamine. I inject him once every 3 weeks, but now I shortened it to once every 10 days to see if it makes a difference. I'm curious about all those supplements you are listing. I'm currently looking at them and will address them with the Vet to see what the best course of treatment is. Thank you so much for your input :)

walking lady RIP Tom replied: "I can't comment on the short-term use of prednisone for arthritis. I had a dog with arthritis and he was on Rimadyl for it, but he was on prednisone (for many months) after he got autoimmune disease. If this were my dog, I'd find a vet who does acupuncture to see if that will help keep him pain free. It's done amazing things for all my greyhounds. And it's better than drugs if it works."

Lorraine replied: "My old boy has just gone on Prednisolone and has been on it for five days. The vet thinks he could have disc trouble but it could also be tumour or spine fusion. He is 11 at least. (rescue). He is panting terribly on it and drinking and peeing loads. But for my old boy it is a last resort. Haven't got any good results yet. As for the arthritis, then other than adding a good glucosamine or greenlip mussel or shark cartiledge to work alongside the NSAID's then I can't suggest anything else. Have found these to be beneficial. I also have had amazing results from accupuncture, and have used it for various things. Only problem is that they will not do it if there is cancer in the system, as it accellerates it. There is the risk at 15 that this could be so. Would still give it a try if it were me though, as recommended above."

grinninh replied: "Many dogs will benefit fom the short term use of prednisone fo arthitis. The problem is arthritis is not cured within that short term use span of time so you need other options. Joint supplements -Takes 4 weeks before impovement is seen -SynoviG3,Cosequin,Arthoplex,ProMotion ae all good glucosamine/chondrotin supplements. I have seen the best results consistently with SynoviG3 which has MSM in it which is a potent anti inflammatory -Prices of supplements vary.Quality does not come cheap.FO about 2 months Arthoplex and Pomotion is about 30 dollars where as SynoviG3 and Cosequin is almost 100-120.00 dollars. Blood work must be checked on any dog to ensure they can metabolize medications prescribed. Was blood work checked on your dog and NSAID therapy ruled out? NSAIDs- non steroidal anti inflammatories like Rimadyl,Metacam and Dermaxx work very well in healthy dogs. They ae safe forr long term use if blood work is monitored afte 2 week then every 3 months to ensure organ function is adequate. Joint supplements should always be administered with omega fatty acids like 3V Caps,Derm Caps or Omega Plus. These acids disrupt the inflammatoy pathway decreasing the amount of discomfort that is perceived. Besides being an anti inflammatoy omega fatty acids are great fo the heart, skin, coat, joints, kidneys and brain. How could you go wrong! Supplementation with glucosamine/chondrotin/MSM and omega fatty acids enhance the effects of NSAIDs and othe pain management. When using supplements and NSAID and pain is still not managed the vet can prescribe tramadol to help ease pain. Dont give up on managing you pets pain. Quality of life is impotant and medications are available to help. Best of luck Add: Adequan is excellent. Sounds like you pretty proactive treating him. I think additional supplementaion will benefit the dog. Especially adding in the SynoviG3 which offers the MSM. Also omega fatty acids will complement the NSAIDS,Adequan and any additional supplements. Honestly if I didn't see the vast improvement in many animals with the use of SynoviG3/Arthoplex I would not recommend it. I saw such a difference in these animals I started supplementation myself which human versions. I have looked into it and the animal data on glucosamine/chondrotin supplementation is much like the human reseach. Much of the research shows little benefit in using the glucosamine/chondrotin in animals just like humans but II have seen dogs near euthaniasia get a couple of years or a skip back in their step with Synovi. With the previcox you want to watch fo any GI upset or straining. If you pooch is shandling it well and it is helping that is great. GI effects can be a problem so anytime the dog has an issue do not over look it. Have blood work checked as he is older and has a chronic illness. I would ask your vet if they have ever prescibed tramadol/Ultram in conjunction with arthitis treatment. Tramadol is great as it doesn't have the nasty side effects that many opioid and NSAID medications do. Its an opioid like pain reliever. It is one chemical process away fom being an opioid so it does offer relief. The only downside is I have heard some dogs get grouchy. Sp it may affect their temperment. I would certainly discuss Tramadol with you vet as we prescibe it often for pain management. Hope this helps!"

what does a lower back pain around the hip mean? I have been taking Prednisone (5 mg) for three months for Rheumatoid arthritis. I've never had lower back pain before. Could the Prednisone have caused early Osteoporosis? This pain has been in my back for almost two weeks. I had blood work urine done at the ER and everything was fine with the labs. I had a vaginal ultra sound and nothing on my ovaries. (I had taken a round of powerful fertility injections prior to the pain developing in my lower back). Any ideas?

imsety replied: "See your health care provider as soon as possible. This reaction may come from the rounds of fertility injections. Low back pain usually involves spasm of the large supportive muscles alongside the spine. Any injury to the back may produce such spasms. Pain-often severe-and stiffness result. The onset of pain may be immediate or may occur some hours after exertion or injury. Often the cause isn't clear. Heat applied to the affected area will provide some relief. You may take acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen as long as you feel significant pain. If significant pain persists beyond a week, call the doctor. And good luck."

What is the cause? Back pain lower lumbar referred to testicle/groin.Doc says pinch nerve and prednisone? X-Ray says no bone spur, etc. Doc doesn't seem to concerned, but I am. I have never had such an odd pain. I feel tightness/soreness in Quad, slight numbness/heaviness in right leg as well. Pain starts in lower right lumbar and radiates around hip over into top of thigh into groin and right testicle. No hernia, though. MRI in a week after Christmas otherwise prednisone for 12 days ( a little nervous about that). No kidney stone, no blood in urine, stool normal (no pain during #1 or #2). So what the heck? Its not sciatica because the pain does not go down the back of leg. Calf has cramping. All on right side. Left side of lower body is peachy keen. I started having a little trouble during Thanksgiving and a little time prior. My hamstrings had been tight but Doc was impressed with hamstrings since Oct 31 annual physical when they were tight. Back stopped hurting not long after Thanksgiving but when I returned to work I started sitting and the pain returned. This past week though it began I am 33 and had prostate checked during physical (the whole fist). MRI will be done IF pain has not subsided after prednisone treatment.

Charlie replied: "As we age, the catillage between the vertebrae thins and flattens, and gradually disapears. This can cause a "pinched nerve." The irritaion between the 2 vertebrae causes swelling...which causes pressure on the nerve...hence treatment with prednisone. Sounds like you are getting excellent medical care...so just keeping asking your doc your questions til you have a clear understanding of his findings. Sitting typically aggravates the situation."

Ron P replied: "If he is taking an MRI of the head he may be ruling out MS. If the steroids work and MRI of the brain and spine shows lessons he may order a lumbar puncture to check for a specific protein. Also you should have your prostate checked (psa). How old are you? Don't worry their is nothing you can do. You seem to be doing all the right things."

Searcher replied: "I don't want to make light of your condition since, as others say, it may be more serious but have you examined poor posture and lack of physical movement during your working day as the possibility. Since you say you sit for work, try this - once every 15 minutes get up and walk around your desk or office for 2 minutes. Make sure to stretch muscles in legs, abdomen, arms, etc. each time. Then sit down and resume work. See if that helps after a couple weeks. Like a lot of people who work in a sitting position for hours on end (especially if a computer is involved) you may be suffering from a severe case of computeritis (my term) which can only be cured through regular physical activity throughout the day. but even if the doctor does find somethgin, my suggestion isn;t goign to harm you and may in fact make you feel better so it is worth doing anyway."

I take prednisone , 15 mg and have been on it for 6 months..? now i have left hip pain and can barely walk unless i take extra strength tylenol. I heard of a condition called aspetic necrosis..(bone death ) caused from the prednisone..this scares me ..anyone else here ever take prednisone and run into hip problems and if so what happened and how was it fixed? thank you. p.s i am 32 years old.

RationalThinker replied: "I've been on Prednisone several times, but never for more than 3-6 weeks. Time to get a second opinion."

Garacaius replied: "Talk to your doctor as soon as possible. I have heard of the condition before. I was on heavy doses of prednisone ( 70 mg/day ) for four years and never had hip or joint problems, it about drove me crazy mentally though. My doctor was finally able to wean me off of it when my condition changed ( sarcoicosis ). Talk to your doctor asap, Good Luck."

SMART @SS replied: "I've been taking prednisone for quite a while for my rheumatoid arthritis. It helps with the pain a lot, but after taking it for a period of time, you body may build an immunity to it. Try taking aleve for a few weeks, then switch back to prednisone. Aleves active ingredient is Naproxen. It's an anti inflamatory that works well with any kind of joint or bone pain. after that, switch back. You won't want to increase your dose of prednisone without your doctors consent. If I were you though, ask your doctor if there is anything else that you can take instead of prednisone. As I said before, it works great for pain, but there are a lot of side affects that can be associated with it such as moonface, necrosis, and even diabetes. P.S. Its not going to be easy to ween you off that stuff though. You cant suddenly quit taking it. If you do, you may experience flare ups with your pain. Ask your doctor for information on how to get off it."

books are cool replied: "It's best to see your doctor. long-term steroid/Prednisone use can hide other health problems and weaken your immune system."

how long does it take for prednisone to start working? doc gave it to me for pain above hip-lower right back and after 3 days nothing has changed--just a lot of pain. mri shows part of spine touching on nerves. would appreciate any info and suggestions thank you does it cause people to feel like they're crawling out of their skin? that's started happening since i began taking it 4 days ago.

David B replied: "takes me about 1/2 hour for it to start working. But it is not a pain med, so I'm not sure what your doctor expects it to do. edit: some people have psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, rage) because of it. It depends on how sensitive you are."

Avasular necrosis on the hip joints..SCARED...Please HELP.? I'am 38 yr old, have Avascular necrosis(AVN)on my hips, more pain on rt than left,3+yrs back I had illness called H S purpura(Vasculities),on doctor's advice used prednisone steroids for 3+yrs and the side effect to these steriods is AVN ,orthopedic surgeon is asking me to go for any one of the three surgeries depending on the sevearity (core decompression, free vascularized fibular graft, hip replacement) for the 2nd and 3 rd 6 months bed rest is required, well the sucess rate is only 55% on the 2nd one,on 3rd one life threatning side effect is there, well I'am SCARED of surgery,I'am not taking any Halopathy medication now,HS Purpura is suppresed, please suggest me any alternate way to get rid of AVN on my hips. I got in touch with homeopath and started using homeo medication since one week ,I know it will take 2-3 months to show improvement if any. please suggest me if any alternate treatment is availaable. somebody please HELP me...........Thanks

Susan S replied: "Steroids can save your life, but they can be dangerous, too. AVN means that the bone in your femur is dying, so I would think surgery would be a must."

Kraftee replied: "I am puzzled that you have been told that you will need 6 months bed rest after THR. This would be HIGHLY unusual because hip replacement patients are likely to be up and around and walking with a walker or crutches before they leave the hospital. I would ask if there is some particular reason that you would need to be in bed for 6 months because bedridden patients are at high risk for development of blood clots in the legs; be sure you ask what kind of prophylactic will be used to prevent them. Waiting to have the condition treated is certainly your prerogative. I personally don't think there is anything that homeopathy can do for your AVN. "About 80% of untreated hips with AVN deteriorate relentlessly and require total hip replacement operation within 2 to 3 years from diagnosis." "The reported success rates [of core decompression] vary between 30 and 60 %." "The reported success rates [of vascularized fibular graft] vary between 60 and 80 %." "The reported success rates [ of osteotomy] are less than 50 %." "THR [as a surgical treatment] for AVN is very effective with success rates of up to 95% during ten years." I've had both hips replaced. It really really works."

What can cause multiple joint pain with a low grade fever? Since August I have undergone several episodes where I have pain in the joints of knee and hips and run a fever between 99.5-100 F When it first began, it was only my left hip and knee. I took advil for two days and it went away. Then a month later it occurred again, this time the pain was severe and again only in my left hip and knee. I was seen by a doctor who gave me daypro and sent me home. It worked for another few weeks. Then I had something else develop facial pain, this brought me to the ER where blood tests were run. My platelets were 65, the doctor diagnosed me with something called Tic Delereaux (sp?). He put me on Tegretol and Prednisone. The treatment worked wonderfully and I had no pain anywhere. I finished the Prednisone last week. Then suddenly Sunday morning I woke up with bilateral knee, hip and Right shoulder pain. The pain in the shoulder is kind of weird location it is around the clavicle area. Again I have fever. I'm 33 years old. The doctor I have isn't the best. He didn't put me on any meds except the daypro and tell me he though it was psychological due to depression. The doctor who put me on the medicine is the ER doctor. Thankfully, he will be starting his own practice the beginning of Jan. and I made an appointment to see him. I'll be paying out of pocket, but it is worth it and I'll also ask him to test me for some of the other stuff. He ran a CBC and a CMP in the ER. Results were slightly elevated WBC's. Platelets were 65 which is low and elevated Liver Enzymes due to probably me being overweight and fat starts to get deposited in the liver. So I am trying to lose weight. Jan 2nd seems forever away to see the doctor. :(

topguntony replied: "Back to Doc don't wait."

Qutubuddin S replied: "Your problem is in one place OK, since you took steroid was the tapering off it was done according to standard procedure that is slowly or abruptly? Any way start prednisolone again, after consulting your doctor and have it tappered off according to standard procedure. You have not mentioned your age? which most Questioners do. you might be having Rheumatic fever too!!!!!Exclude it by consulting your doctor. Dr.Qutub."

minootoo replied: "See a doctor, have test done to eliminate few possible similar problems or confirm them. Re occurring flue. Monkey pox:(may be) Chicungunia: chicungunia, (not sure of spelling), mosquitoes are to be blamed for it. India had about break of it, CDC should get involved if you had contact with an Indian or you yourself were in India. A lady informed us that in last month or so her whole family had come down with it in Ahmadabad, India; but it was all over India. On yahoo Answer India, they had lots of Q? about it in last two months also. I have not seen anything in last week or so."

mcdannells replied: "This blood test they done, did they check for RA? Some people only have pain on one side instead of both sides of the body. Also run a low fever almost all the time....Some people do not realize the pain is not in one half of the body but both sides. This is more typical of RA. Thank goodness for a doctor who gave me the blood test after seeing me a couple time to try to get my forms of arthritis to stop hurting. I love this new technology they have out now!! Go back to doctors and ask more questions..."

Rohan replied: "It seems that you are suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis. You will have to get a blood test done for RA factor. If it is positive, you have Rh.arthritis Please visit a good doctor. Tic delaroux is related to Facial nerve ,which was causing facial pain. This may or not be related to your joint pain"

I have avascular necrosis and need replacement joints because I took Prednisone. Anyone else had this prob? I only took prednisone for one month (a high dose though) because of asthma and now my hip and knee both need replacing due to bone death in my joints.(I already had the hip done). I'm in a lot of pain and narcs don't work. Any suggestions for the pain before and after (especially) surgery in August? Any info would help a lot. Thanks for listening. I also have HepC and am bipolar. What a life huh? That's all for now. Thanks again. :-)

im~just~colleen replied: "geez no.. but I hope you get something. Did you get a morphine patch? I heard they work very well when nothing else does."

bobbalou27 replied: "pain management doctor and clinic they will get all of your meds together and control your pain. if the pain is that bad you may need methadone"

Vidra replied: "I have AVN too. But I am not at the point of joint replacement yet. I don't know what it is like to have joint replacement but I can tell that you are a strong person. Good luck!!"

Please help! 29 yr old mom with terrible joint pain including locking middle fingers.? I recently had my 3rd child by c-section. One night, after a shower, I was in SEVERE JOINT pain (i was VERY cold). I was aching from head to toe & shaking in such pain. For 2 months now... My symptoms have continued especially in the AM & PM or when I am cold. I have locking in BOTH of my middle fingers (clicking like...where I have to PULL the fingers back open). I have terrible head aches and very bad JOINT pain (NOT MUSCLE ONLY JOINT PAIN) (knees, hands, hip, elbow). Ive seen 4 doctors, ruled out (through blood work) most all auto-immune diseases, lyme, etc. My bloodwork is perfect! No med has worked..(pain meds have to be VERY strong) I had one doctor say its not uncommon to develope arthritis after childbirth but Im 29 and had NO prior symptoms. I was put on a HUGE prednisone script - with no relief (only ugly side effects). Ive added HUGE doses of extra vitamins...and Im still MISERABLE In pain EACH day. Its near debilitating. Im begging for help & advice! I have been VERY tired &stressed! I also dont sleep much, Ive been losing weight & Ive been depressed (thought it was due to the new baby & my busy life) I have discussed RA with the docs but assumed with my bloodwork being norm...that I didnt have it..am I wrong? I did have a shot of cort (but the doc said it would be impossible to do all of the joints so we did the prednisone). My fingers "lock" all day long.. it is very severe (vibrates down my arm). The prednisone course was suggested to see if it relieved all of my pains & symptoms (I dont see any change..only ugly side effects) What can I do for the pain? What do people with RA take for the severe pain? I cant function some days. I want to ask the doctor for pain assistance but I feel like they dont believe me when they look at my (normal) test results they say just give it time....I am HURTING, Time isnt helping! Some pain meds work but the docs hesitate to write them. Im so frustrated I could cry!

bill v replied: "When your fingers lock like that it is called trigger finger. An orthopedic doctor should help you. Sometimes a shot of cortisone can help, I had an operation to fix mine."

paul k replied: "I hope I am wrong but you have classic symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. What your doctor should have told you is this. Rheumatoid Arthritis can strike anyone at any age. Women who have RA often experience no pain or even relief from their RA during pregnancy, but often experience severe pain and fatigue for the 3 months following birth. If you do have RA this all makes sense. If Lyme disease has been ruled out as well as other auto-immune diseases, RA seems logical, but not absolute. My fiance was diagnosed at age13, had a hip replacement at age 28 and battles the same problems you describe every day of her life. Prednisone is blanket drug used by doctors for many, many different illnesses. It treats the effect but not the cause so don't be fooled if you start to feel better and then have a relapse. Embril and Humara are the leading drugs used to combat RA. Methatrecsate? is also used but this is an abortive drug and should not be used if pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Google RA and empower yourself. Good luck and God bless."

reverseautism replied: "Did you by any chance receive any vaccinations lately, particularly Rubella, MMR? If so, check out this study: I have had great success with a natural supplement MSM for my back pain, joint pain, arthritis, etc. It is natural so you can't OD on it. I sometimes take up to 2000mg /day. I would get the capsules and not tablets. MSM can be bought at any health food store and even Wal-Mart , drug stores, etc. A resource that I have found to carry quality supplements as well as very fair prices... I also know of a health drink that is phenomenal for inflammation. You may email me if you would like to know more about this product. I have spent the last 10-12 years researching natural healing bc my son is severely disabled with Autism. My daughter and I also have scoliosis. I will NEVER put any of my family on any prescription drugs or even OTC drugs bc of what I have learned. NATURAL is the ONLY way. Please do email me...I want to help. Lindy PS My daughter and my twins were all C-section also. I had complications after the twins and nearly died...I believe vaccinations were involved...also causing my son's Autism."
