Lipitor 40 Mg Information in Questions
Doctor has switched me from 10 mg Lipitor to Simvastatin 40 mg? I understand this is because the local trusts can buy simvastatin cheaper then Lipitor. I had been taking Lipitor 10 mg for 4 years and it did lower my cholesterol. I am wondering why I am having to take 40 mg of Simvastatin ....is that the equivalent of 10 mg of lipitor? My husband takes Simvastatin 20 mg and it works ok for him.

Tina replied: "You need to ask your doctor about that. He may have made a mistake on the script! Give him a call!"

Barberry replied: "Perhaps your total cholesterol was good, but your LDL (bad cholesterol) may have still been a bit too high. Different meds have different actions in how they lower or correct your cholesterol levels. It may also have been related to cost. As for the dosage, without knowing your lab results, we can't say why he chose that dose. If you're entering menopause, your risk of heart problems is higher. Or if you have high BP that is also a factor. Your husband my not have those same risks or have as high LDL. The dosages from one medication to another do not usually correlate, so you can't really say it's equivalent. Also, if the Lipitor wasn't doing the complete job, you don't want something that is equivalent; you want something better. :) Next time you see your doc, ask him if you need that much."

rwroeser replied: "Well first you should ask your Dr. why? But since you ask I do not see any difference in action of the medication, it works on the early stages of synthesis of cholesterol, basically the same way. There can be some new discovery like one has less side effects or another medicine you take doesn't work well with that med so they change it for that reason. Also between you and your husband everyone works differently with meds, and you might need more for the same effects. And here is the big one........ It could be the Dr. gets a kickback for prescribing that new med, from the company who makes it, or your insurance has a drug formulary on what they will pay for and that med is on it. for the same reason as the Dr $ MONEY$. But there is a lot longer list of reasons. The best is ask your Dr. I pray this answer helps. God bless you and your family…."

the_only_solorose replied: "I would like to suggest a book for you to read, it is easy reading, and not very long, but packed with good information. It is called "NO More Heart Disease", and it is written by Nobel Laureate Dr. Louis Ignarro."

spider 1 replied: "A 40 mg of Simvastatin has the comparable effect of 10mg of Lipitor and yes,it's cheaper. Many doctors have come to see simvastatin as a viable substitute for Lipitor. Studies show that at commonly prescribed doses Lipitor and simvastatin are equally effective at reducing LDL cholesterol, the so-called bad cholesterol. A big difference is that Lipitor costs $2.50 to $3 a day, while simvastatin sells for 75 cents to $1 a day at most retail pharmacies, and as little as 10 cents a day at discount pharmacies like Costco’s. Each month, doctors with patients on Lipitor are switching tens of thousands of them to simvastatin."

the_only_solorose replied: "Lipitor is not the only medication for cholesterol and if they make you ill, you definitely should not be taking them. Ask your doctor for something else."

Mithras replied: "No sorry hon' but all the best!! Maybe you should talk to your Chemist or Doctor about your concerns!!"

tootsie replied: "I expect that you already have seen a doctor about this? do go and insist on more help.Good luck"

idoradwaste replied: "I was on Lipitor for three years. I suffered from: sore muscles, tiredness, agitation, digestion problems and anxiety. Finally my liver started to flare up and my doctor took me off of Lipitor. WHAT A BLESSING! I feel 100 times better now than ever before! To cut down on cholesterol naturally, I now take Bios Life. A natural fiber based product that is the ONLY one proven to lower cholesterol and backed by the Cleveland Clinic. Lost ten lbs. too!"

gangadharan_nair replied: "Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet. This kind of diet includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish (not canned in oil), vegetables, poultry, egg whites, and polyunsaturated oils and margarines (corn, safflower, canola, and soybean oils). Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, lard, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods. Please see the web pages for more details on Atorvastatin (generic name) Lipitor (brand name)"

Bubbles replied: "These guys who say do it the natural way are talking sense. I myself have been taking Atorvastatin for qite some time and have had no probs at all and has reduced my cholestral levels to normal. Reading in my various heath mags I get monthly there are mixed views on statins, they help some and not others, however there are other types of statins, maybee you are on the wrong one, see your doctor for help."

Could the Metformin and Lipitor be causing me to be weak? I've been feeling really weak and tired lately and I'm not sick. I was wondering if it could be the Metforming and Lipitor I'm taking? I'm taking 1,000 mg of Metorming and 40 mg of Lipitor. Thanks for any help. Metformin is oral antihyperglycemic drug and is used to help manage Type 2 diabetes. And one of the side effects is feeling very weak and tired. I wonder if both medications is causing me to feel tired? Oh and I had a typo by spelling it Metforming. Its actually Metformn.

purplegirl replied: "It could be the Lipitor as statin drugs have been known to cause muscle weakness and this is well documented. Go see your doctor ASAP. I do not know what Metforming is."

SugarBabie replied: "It could be from either one... There's a rare reaction to Metformin and also to Lipitor that could cause symptoms of fatigue and weakness. You should see your doctor right away, because either one is very serious and you need to rule them out. Its also possible that your blood sugar is still to high. This definately causes fatigue, so you can check your blood sugar at one and two hours after supper and make sure its below 140 (or 7.8 if you are in the UK or Canada). If its running higher than that level, its too high. Symptoms of UNCONTROLLED Type 2 diabetes may include one or more of the following: Fatigue, or a feeling of being "run down" and tired Excessive thirst Frequent urination Extreme hunger Unexplained weight loss Rapid breathing Blurred vision Dry, itchy skin Headache Tingling or burning pain in the feet, legs, hands, or other parts of the body High blood pressure Mood swings Irritability, depression Frequent or recurring infections, such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and skin infections Slow healing of cuts and bruises WARNING: Metformin can rarely cause a condition called lactic acidosis, which can be fatal. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop any of the following symptoms of lactic acidosis: unusual tiredness (fatigue) or severe drowsiness, cold skin, muscle pain, breathing trouble or rapid breathing, unusually slow or irregular heartbeat. Lactic acidosis is more likely to occur in patients who have: kidney or liver disease, conditions that may cause a low oxygen blood level or poor circulation (e.g., severe congestive heart failure, recent heart attack, recent stroke), excessive alcohol use, a lack of body fluids (dehydration), X-ray or scanning procedures that require an injectable iodinated contrast drug, surgery, or a serious infection. Also at higher risk are those who are elderly, especially if you are over 80 years of age and have not had kidney and liver tests. LINKS on statins: Here are some alternative treatments for high cholesterol See the links on this blog for more info on diabetes: Please see your doctor to rule out seroius side effects from either medication, and also look into your post meal readings too. By the way, if your post meal blood sugar is running over 140 mg/dl (or over 7.8 mmol/L ), then you need to get better control, which is pretty hard to do on Metformin. Studies have shown that readings taken 1 and two hours after a meal which exceed this level cause nerve damage. If you can't get better control, it might be time to consider insulin. "Nerve Damage Occurs when Blood Sugars Rise Over 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/L) After Meals""

AdoreHim replied: "Most likely the Lipitor- my husband has been on both drugs, and the Lipitor caused him such fatigue and muscle weakness that eventually , he could barely move."

Might Sta tins be making me urine ate frequently?.? I have been taking Lipitor 40 MG for the past six months, for the past month I have been continually waking up at night to urine ate. sometimes at much as five times a night. Could this be a side effect of the medication?. All polite and sensible answers welcome Thanks for that info Jan and Steven. though don t think I have diabetes as my blood sugar is tested regularly. last time being last November.

Jan409 replied: "my hubby takes statins and certainly is up at least 3 times a night to the loo,but I thought it was his age.......Lol so you may well be right check the leaflet that comes with the meds and see if it suggests that regular visits to the loo is sometimes a side effect"

stevenflay replied: "ive been on atorvastatins for 5 years and i didnt have that problem for 4 of them but a year ago i started doing exactly that, it turned out ive developed diabetes type 1 and thats what was causing it, dont know if it had anything to do with the statins...just thought id say....are you feeling tired all the time and craving lots of cold water, the colder the better"

bella m replied: "Lipitor can cause sleep disturbances. If you are not sleeping properly you might feel you have to pass urine more often in the hopes of getting comfortable and back to sleep. Frequent urination is not a listed side effect. You do not give your age, could you have the beginnings of a prostate problem? The best thing you can do is talk to your doctor, we can only make guesses."

Went from Lipitor to zocor? I was taking Lipitor 20mg a day but i have no more insurance since i lost my job so my doctor put me on zocor 40 mg is that the same as lipitor i dont want to get any reaction everyone even my doctor said its just like taking lipitor, but its zocor same effect as one another, is anyone else change from lipitor to zocor

C R replied: "They are in the same class of drugs. No problem."

baban replied: "Lipitor and Zocor type drugs can have many side effects so to protect yourself and your heart and brain, you should take COQ10 along with it. You can look this up on the interent. PubMed.com"

My total cholestrol is 133 but LDL is 144 & HDL is 40. Is this ok? I take Lipitor 20 mg daily. Should I lower the dosage now.

trisha replied: "Ur Hdl shud increase n LDL decrease!"

Steve F replied: "Um, your numbers make no sense. Typo? If you're below 200 total and your ratio is good, and you have no Hepatic issues, leave well enough alone, or talk to your doctor about a decrease. I presume you went on the meds because lifestyle changes were not enough. If the med is the only thing keeping you at healthy levels, why would you get rid of it?"

Laurence W replied: "Some number you have is wrong. Your total cholesterol is at least 184 if LDL = 144 and HDL = 40. Total cholesterol is LDL + HDL + 1/5 of Triglycerides. More likely your total is 233, with triglycerides of (233-184)*5 = 49*5 = 245."

gangadharan_nair replied: "Hypertension is sustained elevation of resting systolic BP (≥ 140 mm Hg), diastolic BP (≥ 90 mm Hg), or both. Hypertension with no known cause (primary; formerly, essential hypertension) is most common; hypertension with an identified cause (secondary hypertension) is usually due to a renal disorder. Usually, no symptoms develop unless hypertension is severe or long-standing. Diagnosis is by sphygmomanometry. Tests may be done to determine cause, assess damage, and identify other cardiovascular risk factors. Treatment involves lifestyle changes and drugs, including diuretics, β-blockers, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, and Ca channel blockers. You have got Stage 2 hypertension. Dyslipidemia is elevation of plasma cholesterol and/or TGs or a low HDL level that contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. Causes may be primary (genetic) or secondary. Sparky replied: "A DO is a Doctor of Osteopathy which involves bony manipulation. I am not sure that a DO would help your cholesterol problem."

Goldista replied: "It is important to realize that diet is the key to lowering cholesterol levels. Restriction of processed grains, sugars and dairy, and replacing all fluids with water are key. Many doctors are finding large and relatively quick drops (as much as 100 points in several weeks) in people who follow these recommendations. Minor cholesterol (LDL) reductions can be achieved by adding whole grains (especially oats) to the diet. This may seem confusing! Although moderate grain consumption (due to its fibre content) can lower cholesterol somewhat in some individuals, radical grain restriction may substantially lower cholesterol levels in others. If large reductions are needed or other cholesterol-lowering methods are ineffective, grain and sugar restriction may be the answer. Elevated cholesterol levels have been seen in patients with atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypothyroidism and pregnancy. Elevated total cholesterol greater than 270mg may be associated with mercury toxicity. You may talk to your doctor about a test for blood-sugar, and thyroid. Also, check with your dentist about Mercury amalgam."

ginny r replied: "Red Yeast Rice is an herbal remedy, but it can raise your liver enzymes so needs to be monitored, but it does lower cholesterol. A holistic doctor treats the whole body including emotions. Look in the yellow pages or call your local library information to locate one. A DO is an osteopathic doctor. They use manipulation to realign parts of the body sort of like a chiropractor, but they can also prescribe medicine. I would try either of the doctors you mentioned if nothing is working with conventional medical doctors suggestions."
