lochmessy replied: "Just to let you know you are not the only one in your situation. To begin with I have an orphan disease called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. It is a disease of the joints, all my joints are weak and my body produces a protien that tears all my ligaments, and to date I have had about 17 surgeries, including 2 ACL transplants, and multiple surgeries on my hands and feet and one shoulder. Before I was diagnosised I started to feel sick and became very depressed and my therapist talked me into going on an SSRI drug. Truthfully before that I always saw drugs as a crutch and really didn't want to do this. I started on a low dose of Paxil and saw an immediate change, but kept breaking through, so I ended up on 5 pills. I started to see my body change,my weight started to edge up, but I don't own a scale, so I had no idea of how much I had put on. Also, I knew I had cut down on the excercising, but knew I hadn't started to eat more so I was confused. I knew I had gone up a size, but my regular doctor kept saying that I was eating more then I thought and excercising wrong. Not a very good doctor as it turned out. Anyway, my shrink listened to me, but wasn't sure what to do. It wasn't realized at that time that Paxil could put on weight so easily. I was also a total innsommniac, so my shrink put me on Elival, which I then found out was another drug that put on weight immediately. So, I ended up going from 145 pounds to 225 in not all that long a time. I would go on very strict diets and lose a little weight and then all of a sudden all the weight would come back. Through all this I ended up at a pain doctor as my back went out, all the ligaments loosened up and my back swings free (pure pain). I was told that I probably had Epstein Barr, which wasn't helping anything. So, I was switched to every SSRI that was out there, with the result that none of them worked to help my depression. I was of course taken off of the Elavil. Finally my Rhuemotologist and knee surgeon told me they were going to do one of those stomach band operations on me to lose the weight if I couldn't do it myself. By then i was down to one Paxil (20mg) and trying to use different sleeping pills, none of which work. I ended up going on Atkins diet and lost a lot of weight, what a relief. It has been 5 years now, I have used Atkin, switched for awhile to Weight Watchers, and finally South Beach Diet and finally managed to lose all the weight. Well, I did lose all the weight, but got really depressed and put on about 10 pounds, but am now back on a diet and losing again and know I will be back to my low weight soon. I screwed up my medicines, my fault and that's why I put on the weight. I can't blame anyone else this time around.
So, I've given you a long saga here, but shown you that with more problems then you have I've managed to get myself back, weightwise to myself, or close to it. I was up to a size 22 and am now about a size 10 or 12, and look damn good in jeans and leggings (I'm a tall woman), so it can be done. I'm still sick and I sleep most of the day and have trouble at night, and now have psorosis on the base of my feet, ugh, so life sucks.
But, what I suggest is that you sit down with your doctor and talk about all the medicine you have taken and decide on a plan to get you off of most of what you are taking. I'm not a doctor, but can only go by what I've been through. So, I say the best thing for you is to get you on the lowest value possible of effexxor if that is the drug that is the best for you, and leave it at that. Let your body get accustommed to that. Then, if you need to add to that do it slowly, but do use as little as possible. Try and stay away from the sleeping drugs, try to do something like excercise before you try to go to sleep to knock yourself out. Try anything to stay off of the medicines that put on the weight. You are at the weight where you can go to one of the clinics where they do some of the different stomach stapling. A friend of mine did something with a removable rubberband that worked wonders for her. She lost over a hundred pounds in about a year. I can't believe the difference. For her it worked, while I have another friend who did the original stapling and it didn't work.
Good luck, talk to your doctor, he is really the only one who can help you work your way through this. And remember, if he doesn't really help, he is not the only one out there, you can always change doctors and find someone who will really be there for you and understand how important weight is for us. It can be the most important thing in our lives. I wish you the luck that I have had, but hope it doesn't take you as long, except that I know I did it the right way slow and steady. South Beach was the best by the way."

Wasted seven years going to doctors, taking whatever they gave me, trusting whatever they said...I gained 95 lbs in 2 years...which, like you...isn't normal for me.
The one main thing all the doctors said and I never believed was...antidepressants don't make you gain weight. Well, they are right. Unfortunately, what they don't tell you because they don't know...or care to know....is that ADs suck lots of vitamins out of you, creating a nutritional imbalance, which can turn in to a hormone imbalance, significant illnesses, which just domino into other illnesses...etc.
If you ever want to get off the antidepressants, stop gaining weight and fix the PROBLEM instead of fixing SYMPTOMS...see a doctor like mine...
You will feel better, the weight will drop off. It's crazy but true. You have to be an advocate for yourself...there is no one else who cares more about what you're dealing with than YOU.
Mainstream conventional doctors don't treat or know how to treat what your underlying issues are. They are taught in med school to push antidepressants on you if you give more than one symptom!
DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!!! :) Good luck."
Kat replied: "I feel bad that you have to be on so many meds. and are so young. I'm wondering if they can cut you back somewhere. I have never taken Remeron, Restoril works for me. I take Effexor and it put a little weight on me but I can deal with getting it off and I'd rather have it and feel well mentally. Being overweight can cause depression too. Talk to your Dr about all the different meds, and see if he can either cut or change some, have him give you a exercise program and change your way of eating, I don't like the word diet so I just change my way of eating. Don't ever be ashamed of yourself unless you have done something to deserve it, and gaining weight does not."
mark f replied: "You have a somewhat complicated history. From what I can gather from the information that you have given is that your sleep problems were innitially drug enduced. I wonder if you had a normal sleep pattern or reasonably normal before taking these various meds. What I would say is that you should not stop taking a medication that your body has been used to taking, if you have taken it longer than a month or 2. You can get rebound insomnia not to mention many other withdrawal or discontinuation effects such as anxiety, panic, depression etc. Restoril is a benzodiazepine and ambien and lunesta are benzo like in how they work. They all have a dependency/tolerance and withdrawal problems assocaited with them. Here is a site with more information"
Cheryl W replied: "I wish I could answer this question for you. I have gained weight steadily on Depakote and Lexapro over the past few years, but have seemed to peak at 196 for a while now. The problem is, that's 40 pds more than I should weight. I seem to be stuck there. I do know this, when I started WALKING and watching what I ate, and FIGHTING the weight GAIN, I stopped gaining, and started toning. The problem is, I can' t seem to KEEP going. Don't take your weight-gain is FATE, fight it!! Get movin, watch what you put in your mouth. I have had doctors tell me over and over, that's it's not the meds that are doing it, well, bull-pucky...I don't believe that...but I also don't believe I'm doomed t an either "no meds" or "meds and fat" death sentence. These meds have changed my and my family's life. I'm looking for alternative ways as well to lose weight."
What anti-depressant to use??!!? Hey ppl! I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I am a 22 yr old male who has been taking remeron for depression and social anxiety for nearly a year but lately have been feeling very depressed and anxious! My doc has prescribed lexapro 20 mg but i am very apprehensive to take it! I'm scared of the side effects especially potential insomnia and hair loss! My doc says the hair loss thing is exceptionally rare but I'm so paranoid about it! Remeron helps me to sleep but lately even that has not been great. It seems to do little for my social anxiety and I have been very withdrawn recently . I also think remeron seems to make me feel a bit stupid! I mean I find it hard to concentrate and digest information whilst on it! Is this possible or just my imagination? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

123abc replied: "Marco, there are many different meds out there for this problem. But sometimes it takes awhile to find the right drug or combination of drugs for you. If you feel that something is not working, then call your doctor and discuss it with them. They will slowly wean you off one drug then slowly introduce another. And remember that these drugs do take about 4 weeks to totally do their thing so don't expect results overnight. Good luck to you."
lexapro weight gain? I really need to gain weight. I have been on Prozac in the past for panic attacks, I felt great but the weight dropped down 10 lbs in the first month. Now the doctor wants me to try Lexapro, for my panic attacks. I would like to try it but I am afraid I will lose weight again. Right now I am at 96 lbs. I need to put on a good 20 lbs. Sure would like some feed back on this. I really need some help with the weight problem. I eat but I guess I burn it off with the stress and worries. All members of my family are on the thin side, but there was a time when I was up to 135... I miss those days. The only thing I feel depressed about is my weight. Panic attacks run in my family and I have been a victim of dom violence, since the dom violence my panic attacks come and go. I have received a lot of help with this issue but my weight is still to low. I have even tried remeron, it helped a bit.
If I start the lexapro, how long will it take until I know if it will help my weight problem?
aderifield replied: "i gained 35 lbs on lexapro in 6 mo. - ugh"
fax290 replied: "I have taking both Lexapro and Prozac (in that order) for panic attacks as well and neither affected my weight. It might not be the medication, but just your body.
One a side note as well, neither of these medications made me feel better or worse. Instead of switching to Lexapro try weening yourself off of any anxiety medication (By the way- Lexapro is no more effective in higher doses than lower doses, your mg dosage only depends on your weight). If you stop using these medications that may be causing you to lose weight, you could focus on a strict diet to gain those 20lbs. Obviously check with your doctor first though, I'm only going from my experience."
Lestats Night replied: "Hey, my doctor prescribed Pexeva AKA paxil for me and its making me gain weight. Like you im skinny and wanna gain more weight even if its fat weight. They gave pexeva to me for social anxiety, but I noticed that im gaining weight "Which was a plus" Ive been on it for 3 weeks so I hope i keep gaining weight. Talk to your doctor about pexeva, trust me, it will help you gain weight even if you have a high metabolism like me."
fullofsmiles04 replied: "My doctor put me on Lexapro about a month or 2 ago. I don't feel like I have not gained any weight from it but you need to focus on the anti depressant too! You should snack often between meals and maybe even drink nutritional shakes between meals that will help with your calorie in take too. Good luck!!
A fat women!!"
Tamela K replied: "i was on lexapro for 6 months and gained 35 pounds without changing my diet at all.I also have a few friends that have did the same thing.so my answer is yes"
spiderhedron replied: "I take Lexapro, and I've put on a few (dozen) pounds over the last few years. My advice is to take your doctor's advice. Also ask him for Xanax (if you don't already have some) to take during acute panic attacks."
Sparkles replied: "I gained a total of 42 lbs on Lexapro. I was 129 lbs when I started and a whopping 172+1 or 2 at the moment. Because of the weight gain my Doctor switched me to Cymbalta. I have just weened off of the Lexapro, it took 2 months to do so. I pray that I can start losing weight now.
I never changed the way I ate or daily regimen during the whole time I was on Lexapro. I stay very busy and only ate once a day. I had a lot of blood work done and everything came out normal so my Doctor said it was the Lexapro. It effects people in different ways. I just want to be healthy and not add to other health problems related to weight. Good luck on your journey."
