Weight gain on Abilify and Remeron? I have gained over 20 pounds in 2 months and I was wondering if the Abilify and Remeron was causing the weight gain? I noticed my appetite increased quite a bit but is it because of the medicine? I am ready to stop them and try something else. If it is causing the weight gain, what are medicines similar that don't cause weight gain if you know? I am always hungry and do crave a lot of carbs.

Amanda replied: "Yep. Remeron is notorious for crazy carb cravings. It's not the MED that causes the weight gain, it's that you are eating too much! The hunger gets better as you are on the med, you just have to really watch what you are putting in your mouth. Abilify (and many other anti-depressants/anti-psychotics) mess with your metabolism, and it can be good or bad depending on the person. There are no other meds that work like Remeron, there are several options for anti-psychotics like abilify, but they are even worse for weight gain."

rolex replied: "abilify, and other meds, can trigger certain regions of the brain, that tells it that you are hungry, i take hormone replacement pill, that cause weight gain, but i kick it in the butt, by eating healthy, and walking, i refuse to allow a little pill to "make" me hungry, when i don't need to eat."

Simon W replied: "Remeron is well known for causing weight gain but it is a very good antidepressant, you could try Effexor instead."

LeeCee replied: "Remeron is known for that. I tried it and didn't like it too much, I thought it made me too zoned out and sleepy."

Needs help with Remeron? My dr just recently prescribed Paxil 20 mg to me and told me to stop taking the Remeron 30 mg I have been taking this drug for 9 yrs). I am scared to stop taking it even though my panic attacks are worse , this dr informed me he don't have much info on remeron so he can't help me with it. Please if there is anyone out there who knows who or what to do please feel free to write back. I am 29 yrs old and I don't want to deal with the withdrawls if it's going to be bad I rather he increase the Remeron which he won't :(

michele replied: "You're simply replacing one SSRI (i.e., Remeron) with another (i.e., Paxil). There should be no problem here whatsoever with discontinuing the Remeron."

J'adore replied: "I'd be scared too. Paxil is an awful drug. I couldn't handle it.... it had way too many side effects. I was on Remeron for a long time and didn't have any withdrawals. Personally I like the Zyprexa... I think you should talk to him about something besides Paxil"

rocket replied: "I took Remeron for about 2 months as an antidepressant and sleep aid during a 'crisis' state (I was also on lithium, lamictal, and either Ambien, Lunesta, or Trazepran or something.) I was resistent to the medication entirely, hating the lethargy it caused and blaming it for the side effects that were actually caused by very high 'crisis' dosages of my other meds.... After they deemed me healthy enough, I was told to taper off of the Remeron (cut the 30 mg in half, I think) for a two weeks, then quit completely. Well, I just quit. I was much more tired than I had been, and it lasted a few days, but went away. I did not notice any other withdrawal symptoms... although it's hard when you're on that many meds! :) Basically, all that happened to me was a brief excess of lethargy. I have very bad experiences tapering (well, more so quitting) meds in terms of withdrawal symptoms and the returns of episodal behavior, but Remeron was an easy one. Good luck!"

Which is better for chronic depression and a severe sleep disorder: Remeron or Trazodone? I have been diagnosed with dysthymia as well as various phobias and IBS. I also have very severe chronic insomnia that my psychiatrist says is part of my chronic depression. I tend to sleep 2-5 hours a night, if at all. When I do sleep, I have very vivid, disturbing nightmares. So far, I've tried the drugs Prozac and Celexa. Neither helped with the depression; Prozac worsened my IBS and made me lose weight, although it did help a little bit with the insomnia, and Celexa killed what little was left of my appetite, made me lose ten pounds (which is pretty bad for someone with an already low BMI), worsened my sleep disorder and made me feel like I had the flu (constant puking, dizzyness and achyness). My shrink recommends that I try Zoloft next, but a big part of me wants to stay away from SSRIs because I reacted so badly to the ones I've taken (both of which were supposedly "mild SSRIs"). Lately, I've been looking for atypical antidepressants that are helpful for sleep disorders and have little risk of weight loss or digestive side effects. I came across Remeron in my search, and a friend of mine who has been on nearly every antidepressant on the market recommends Trazodone. I've researched them both, and both sound equally attractive to me. I like Remeron for its reduced risk of digestive side effects and weight loss and for its superb track record for curing sleep disorders. Still, the risk of weight gain holds me back a little. I could stand to gain 10 or 20 pounds, but the idea of putting on any more weight than that does not sound at all appealing to me, and gaining obscene amounts of weight is not unheard of with Remeron. I like Trazodone, again, for its good track record with sleep disorders and lowered risk of dependency. Still, I don't like risk of diarrhea/constipation. Also, my friend who recommended the Trazodone told me that it's usually prescribed with another antidepressant (he took it with Zoloft). I'm very medication sensitive, even before going on psych meds (even small doses of baby aspirin and antibiotics almost always give me stomach problems), so I'd like to avoid taking a cocktail of meds if I can. Anyone have any experience with either of these drugs? If so, how did they effect you? Which one do you think would be better for my situation?

Noir-Industries replied: "Every persons body chemistry reacts different to medications. Trazadone made me a zombie I felt like I lost years of my life. Every few years I've had to change my cocktail Zoloft did good and so did prozac. I use I take sequel for sleep it takes 2 months before you will adjust to it. You will wake up sleepy and need to take naps all day. Then after 2-3 months I now wake up refreshed and sleep all night. It knocks me out in about 30 minutes. All your meds are going to cause potty problems Start taking fiber everyday. Take citrucel it does not cause gas like the other brands."

Elizabeth replied: "I haven't taken Trazodone, but I can comment on the Remeron. I took it in combination with Effexor and Zyprexa, for Tourette's, depression, anxiety and OCD (comorbid to the Tourette's). I also took Remeron alone for awhile to help with insomnia. I don't have IBS, but I'm very sensitive to anything ingested, and Remeron didn't upset my stomach. It definitely works better as a sleep aid than any actual sleeping pill prescription I've had. I normally sleep about 4 hours a night, broken.. Remeron doubled the time. It made me very tired, but the tiredness extends for a few hours the next day as well. I was one of the people that gained an obscene amount of weight, although I'm not sure if it was the Zyprexa, the Remeron or the combination. I gained over 30kg though (66 lbs) in less than 6 months, despite my efforts (with gym and diet). It makes you very hungry, and crave all the wrong sorts of food (lots of sugar and processed carbs). Add that to sleeping all the time, and you get the idea. I lost the weight within about a year of going off the meds. If you have a low bmi, it could be very good for you. If you've ever had a problem with purging, it has been known to help that as well. I think the amount of weight I gained is not normal (but obviously possible), and as long as you monitor it closely, you should be able to tell if you are gaining too quickly. In my case, the antipsychotic (Zyprexa) made me zombie-ish and I didn't realize soon enough just how much I had gained. It's also possible to take most meds (including antidepressants) non-orally. It's something you would need to discuss with your doctor, and perhaps have a special preparation from a pharmacist, but it is occasionally done for people that have trouble taking them by mouth."

Any opinions on Remeron? I am a 20 year old in college abroad. I was wondering if anyone has any experiences they can share while taking Remoron. Any advice?

Jenny S replied: "I took remerson as an anti-depressant for a while. It worked really well, and I slept better than I have with anything else, but I was hungry ALL the time. I gained a lot of weight and my doctor took me off of it. I read somewhere that it is one of the drugs they give to anexorics to improve their appetites."

Problem with weight gain after anorexia? I had anorexia for 6 years. I am in my mid 20's. I have been in remission for over a year. In the past year and a half I have gained A LOT of weight back, and now I am about 30 pounds overweight. (I used to be 40 pounds underweight). I only eat about 1,400-1,500 calories a day, walk 4 miles every morning, but the weight still doesn't come off. I also am taking 30 mg. of Remeron a day for depression. Any suggestions on why/how to get rid of the extra weight?

Lauren M replied: "Well, the remeron could be causing a lot of it. On top of that, when a person is anorexic, they often lose their muscle tone. Increased mucle means higher metabolism. If you don't have a lot of muscle, you'll have a slower metabolism than other people of your height and weight. I'd have your BMR checked and start into a weight-lifting plan. Congratulations on your remission! Please make sure that you're truly overweight and not relapsing before trying to lose. I know you probably know this, but I just wanted to say it."

Sean G replied: "most people are a bit overweight, continue with a healthy lifestyle and your weight should balance out...because of the disease, your metabolism is really low at the moment, being sure to eat every 3 or 4 hours (just a little bit, small meals) will boost your metabolism to work better and at a healthier pace, and in some time, it really will balance out."

Step_On_Me replied: "i have heard that your body becomes so starved that afterwards it holds on to everything....just incase it needs it in the future. i am sure you look very nice with the extra pds. dont worry about what the scale says"

Michelle B replied: "Take a multi vitamin that helps raise your metabolism and drink a lot of water and green tea. Your doing really good on your calorie in take and walking keep it up even though your not seeing results yet you will soon. The extra weight is from not eating for a long time your body drooped its metabolism, so when you start eating again its not used to burning off calories it was just storing it. Its a long road but it gets better. I have good years and bad years keep positive and stay away form numbers on the scales that's always a killer. And lots of small healthy snacks is the best way to eat, its easier for your body to burn that off then eating 500 cal at one time, but the green tea really helps with all that."

kheserthorpe replied: "FIrst of all, forgive me for saying this, but I don't trust your judgement on whether you're overweight or underweight. I don't say that to be cruel, but I'm sure you realize you have demonstrated a poor ability to judge your own weight. Hey, that is how it is, by accepting that, you can move on. So my first suggestion is to talk to a physical trainer. Let them comment on whether you need to gain or lose weight. I woudln't be _surprised_ if you did, for reasons I'll get to below, but lets just get a 3rd party to help you set targets and talk about how to reach them. Now, why wouldn't I be surprised if you were overweight? The same reason people who diet tend to bounce back to an even higher weight. When you were anorexic, your body was starving. A starving body tries desparately to KEEP fat so it can survive, and it does this by dumping all its muscle. That drops your baseline metabolism. Then when the person goes off the diet, or whatever, if they eat what they used to, the fat piles on because their metabolism is still down from the lost muscle mass. So, short story, my guess is you probably need to _gain_ some muscle mass, which will stoke up your baseline metabolism. Its not a bad idea for any woman, but I woudln't be surprised if particularly for you, coming out of anorexia, weight lifting would really help you building your body back. Again, I think speaking to your doctor, but probably joining a gym, working at least some of the time with a trainer, to rebuild a base muscle mass that will help you stay at a healthy weight is in order. Don't worry about turning into a ball of muscle, its just not going to happen. The vast majority of women do not have sufficient testosterone to really bulk up muscle wise (unless they take steroids. and no, I'm not accusing all female bodybuilders of using steroids - women who go into bodybuilding tend to be those exceptional women who have higher testosterone then most women). By the way, a huge congratulations to you for fighting off the disease. A great accomplishment, and you should be _very_ proud."

Chloe replied: "FIrst of all, congrats. I too am in my 20s and recovering from a long painful bout with anorexia. Chances are, your medication is probably your biggest reason you've gained weight. I too was on an antidepressant for awhile and gained over 20 pounds, and I was on the lowest possible dosage. They are notorious for that. When I got off of it, I lost the weight pretty quickly. Also, it takes the body awhile to recover from anorexia. Weight gain is absolutely inevitable. You might want to kick up your workouts, though... a 4-mile stroll might not be enough. Try running or jogging, and add weights. If I were you, I'd talk to my doctor about this. In the meantime, ditch your scale... it is every anorexic's worst enemy. I'm in remission and I don't go near a scale... too easy to fall back into old habits. Just concentrate on eating healthy and working out and you'll be good. Good luck!"

courage78 replied: "the remeron is likely the cause. I too have an eating disorder and gained more than 30 pounds on it. You may want to ask your doctor to switch your meds up. I lost most of the weight in a very short time."

Accidental Overdose? Okay so I did it on purpose, but now I changed my mind. I took 5-30 mg Remeron 3, 5-20 mg fluoxetine, 7-20mg celexa, 5-10mg flexeril, and 5 hydrocoodone/apap 10/650 about 12 minutes ago. I tried to puke them up, but nothing is working. I can't go to the ER or a hospital cause they will think I am suicidal and put me in the mental hospital. Then I will loose my job, my house, my scholarships, and everything Will it hurt me bad if I just try to keep throwing them up? What will happen if I don't get all of it out? It can't kill me can it? What kind of damage will they do to me? I know...I am SO stupid and I should have thought of all this before I did something so idiotic. okay....i called911 and they are comming. i live in th boonies so... siege- I dont take them everyday...they are the leftover from the different ones i tried ifeel like thanks--theyre here bye

Erica R replied: "CALL 911 AND ASK FOR POISON CONTROL.....SOME MEDS SAY TO INDUCE VOMITING AND SOME DON'T.....YOU NEED TO GO TO ER AND GET YOUR STOMACH PUMPED.....DON'T EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING OR IT WILL CARRY THROUGH YOUR BLOOD STREAM FASTER.....NOW GO GET ON THE PHONE!"

beccamt2006 replied: "I have no idea what all that is. But I did something like that once. I couldn't puke it up. So, I went to the emergency room and told them that I only accept treatment in complete confidence and refuse the stomach pump. They just had me drink charcoal and sit there all night. They had a psych doctor talk to me for a bit. He could tell I just did something stupid and it was a one time thing. I told him I was just joking around with friends but accidentally swallowed it all. They released me in the morning. My bill was about $400-$700. But it's very little compared to death. Plus, you may not die. You might just do a ton of damage and f*ck up your body. Good luck."

infernal_seamonkey replied: "It takes about 20 minutes to enter the bloodstream and then you're screwed. Drink a huge glass of water and stick your finger down your throat...NOW"

kellyshelly04 replied: "you are NOT stupid i think you should go to the hospital whats more important your life or your job you can get another job life well thats not so easy! go to the er you need to get that out of your system why are you online asking go go go go go!!!!!"

catzrme replied: "I did the same type thing 2 weeks ago. They stated if I had not gone to the ER and taken the medicines to flush the toxins out of my system, I would have died. It may have taken 2-3 days. And, note, I threw up 20 times before deciding to go to the ER. The fact is you are suicidal. If you go, they will place you in a mental hospital after you are cleared medically. I don't see how that could affect your job, house, scholarship... Mental illness is illness."

plh2you replied: "hate to tell ya but you ARE suicidal!!!! you just tried to kill yourself!!!!! AND WHAT THE ? ARE YOU DOING WITH ALL THOSE MEDS LAYING AROUND?????"

l_quicksilver replied: "Get your a** on the phone with 911. Now. All the other stuff will work itself out. Right now, you have 2 choices; live to resolve it, or maybe...then maybe not...get lucky."

sandra j replied: "Look, you need to go to a hospital, It CAN kill you so forget the job, house, scholarships etc. They will put a tube down into your stomach and suck as much of the pills as they can out. You will h ave drink charcoal, which de-detoxifies poisons. You will have to see a psychiatrist, which might actually be a benefit. He will determine if you need to stay in the hospital. Appropriate remorse and appropriate and quick response to the OD may make him decide that you'd you would would be best seen on an outpatient basis, thus non reportable. Don't wait. Go to the ER. You know your life is more important that a bunch of pills."

sweety replied: "hey, you do need to see a doc....you might suffer liver damage...and will ultimately die."

grease replied: "Get your ass to the hospital now. Find some epicac to swallow and it will induce your vomitting. Be prepared to get really sick. get the phone in your hand ready to phone 911. I hope you don't die."

Cherry Blossom replied: "GO TO THE HOSPITAL! You are worried about what it will look like? You could have some serious organ damage (kidney &/or liver) or even die! GET HELP! It is better to get help when you need it and yes, you should get psychiatric help, too, to help understand why you did this and hopefully prevent it happening again."

matcubfan replied: "PLEASE GET HELP. NOW IF YO DONT CALL A DOCTOR YOU WILL NOT WAKE UP . I AM A PHARMACOLOGIST FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. YOU HAVE EVERY REASON TO LIVE. SUICIDE IS THE ONLY SIN IN WHICH YOU CAN NOT BE REDEEMED. ETERNITY IS A LONG TIME . PLEASE GET HELP. YOU PROBLEMS CAN BE GOTTEN THROUGH."

pussnboots333 replied: "call 911-if you're still alive before you pass out, call a friend"

char g replied: "I have the drug tolerance of a horse but you really need to go to the hospital girlfriend or you are going to fall out and not wake up. Don't waste anytime worrying about everything else it will still be there when you get out of the hospital but you may not be. If i knew where you were i would call 911 myself. I overdosed on 15 klonapins once. YES IT CAN KILL YOU!!!!! Forget about us and get to the hospital now!!!!!"

siege replied: "Wow, I've got to give you some credit. I can't beleive you have a doctor that prescribes that many antidepressants and pain killers to you. I'm surpised that taking all that stuff together every day doesn't kill you even in a regular dose. If you were looking for attention you got it. If you really did it you should get to the ER. You obviously have some serious problems to be on all that stuff so I'm sure someone already knows your suicidal. You might as well choose life."

Allison Rose replied: "OMG!!!! GET TO THE ER! NOW!!!! you will loose your job, because you will be dead!! I understand what your mind was going through before doing what you did, throwing it up could help, but most of the medication has been dissolved already!!!Good luck sweetie, Please take care."

Wednesdays child replied: "you should just lye down on your back and keep drinking lots of water. you are not going to die from taking a few SSRI's, muscle relaxer, an opiate, and tylenol. accually the worst you probably took is all the tylenol. so basically you are going to feel sedative. but dont stress and dont take those again either. good luck"

peace and love replied: "sweetie I am a paramedic and if you cant get the pills back up by vomiting you need to go to the er some of the stuff you took could cause you to slow your breathing way down or even stop breathing not to mention the combination of all the things you took. if you really changed your mind go to the er now."

tink replied: "You run the risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from hyperstimulation of brainstem 5-HT1A receptors from taking prozac, celexa, and remeron. Yes you can die. You are not stupid. You were crying for help and it seems you are getting it so good luck."

apeystar replied: "You're in for a rough ride, including drinking charcoal and living in a mental hospital for a few nights. I wish you the best of luck and I hope that your issues get addressed properly."

me and my cuzion is fighting over this can anyone tell me if i should lesson to her? me and my cuzion is fighting over this can anyone tell me if i should lesson to her and give up my keys? i just took remeron should i go driveing? is it safe too on this meds? she is treating me like a child. and she said she is going to take away my computer if i do not lesson to her. and i go driveing. what should i do i am 20. is she right. should i care about not seeing 21? i gave her one set alredy but i have 6 more sets. what should i do tell her? and give them to her. she thinks i am asleep lol. so is should give her the keys?

KK replied: "wat in the world are you talking about dear?"

skittles replied: "Your cuz is trying to keep you safe. Stay at home tonight!!!You can always go driving tomorrow when you 1. you are in a better mood and not so upset and 2.not on remeron."

fred_coolbubba06 replied: "man just give her all the keys and go to sleep. give her a hug too and a kiss good night. she is only trying to help you and keep you safe she is scared you are going to go and drive and get hurt realy bad. so please give her the keys. and she will stop yelling at you."

CHICKY replied: "why are you so selfish that you would endanger someone else ........ your sick and you need to grow up"

gameralltheway replied: "Well, from the way you worded this, I think NOT. Don't do anything without asking your doctor. The doctor will tell you the effects the Remeron will have on you and what to expect. UNTIL you know it's in your system, and how YOU are going to react, don't drive. BE SAFE"

yellow01gt replied: "lets see...i was on remeron (mirtazipine) for a while...the doctor that prescribed it to me, told me to take it at night because it would cause drowsiness...so until you familiarize yourself with the effects i would suggest not driving...for me, it didnt even make me sleepy (i have a terrible insomnia even to this day)...so i could have driven fine on it...if you already know how its going to affect your body...then you should be able to decide for yourself if you are capable of driving while you are on it...good luck!"

Drugs have made me gain 75 pounds in 7 months :( What can I do? In Sept I weighed 140 lbs and went on Yaz (a new birth control pill that supposedly does not make you gain weight) because I have severe PMDD. In 2 months I gained 20 lbs, but on the bright side my PMDD symptoms have improved a lot. At 160 lbs, I went on Zoloft and gained 10 lbs. (I have social phobia, body dysmorphic disorder, and anxiety) Then I switched to Lexapro, and gained yet another 10 lbs. At 180 lbs, I was put on Effexor XR and my doctor told me it would help me lose weight. I gained 15 pounds. I have been dealing with insomnia and have had no relief from any of the sleep medications out there (Ambien, Lunesta, Restoril, Rozerem, etc). My doctor prescribed me Remeron and it is the only thing to work. Sadly, it has caused me to gain another 20 lbs. I AM SO DEPRESSED. I have gone from weighing 140 lbs before drugs, to 215 lbs, a total of 75 pounds in only 7 months and I am only 21! And, since I have BDD I can no longer go out in public because I am so ashamed. The Zoloft caused the insomnia and to this day I cannot sleep without the Remeron, and I went off the Zoloft 5 months ago. The Remeron causes me to be sluggish.I have no energy to even walk around. I need to get off of it. What can I take that will be sedating enough that will not cause me to gain weight, or will possibly help me lose weight? I limit my food intake and the Effexor makes me not hungry so it's not that I'm eating myself away. I can't excerise due to health problems and the Remeron makes me so exhausted. I'm going to see my doctor and discuss this with him. Any suggestions on antidepressants (possbily ones that cause sleepiness) that would help me to lose all of this weight? Anyone with a similar experience?

k s replied: "Those are the side effects of sex and drugs."

ballsonthewalls replied: "You are beautiful as you are."

I Heart Horses replied: "DUH!!! quit the drugs and maybe yo life would improve! it sounds like those medicines have given you more downs than ups?"

courage78 replied: "I don't know about the other meds, but i gained 38 pounds in a matter of months on Remeron. The good thing is that when I went off it, 30 pounds melted away in three months. I don't know what to tell you because it sounds like you need the meds. I am not really into alternative health care, but it might be worth looking into--don't go off your meds on your own though...very dangerous"

Ashleigh J replied: "don't take drugs!!!"

kckmellons replied: "i take lexapro an klonapin for my anxiety and ambien to help me sleep. i have not gained any weight off of those. unfortunatly a lot of antidepressents can cause you to gain weight but talk to your doctor and see if he can help you with weight loss. sometimes they can prescribe something that goes with what you are taking. good luck"

lochmessy replied: "Just to let you know you are not the only one in your situation. To begin with I have an orphan disease called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. It is a disease of the joints, all my joints are weak and my body produces a protien that tears all my ligaments, and to date I have had about 17 surgeries, including 2 ACL transplants, and multiple surgeries on my hands and feet and one shoulder. Before I was diagnosised I started to feel sick and became very depressed and my therapist talked me into going on an SSRI drug. Truthfully before that I always saw drugs as a crutch and really didn't want to do this. I started on a low dose of Paxil and saw an immediate change, but kept breaking through, so I ended up on 5 pills. I started to see my body change,my weight started to edge up, but I don't own a scale, so I had no idea of how much I had put on. Also, I knew I had cut down on the excercising, but knew I hadn't started to eat more so I was confused. I knew I had gone up a size, but my regular doctor kept saying that I was eating more then I thought and excercising wrong. Not a very good doctor as it turned out. Anyway, my shrink listened to me, but wasn't sure what to do. It wasn't realized at that time that Paxil could put on weight so easily. I was also a total innsommniac, so my shrink put me on Elival, which I then found out was another drug that put on weight immediately. So, I ended up going from 145 pounds to 225 in not all that long a time. I would go on very strict diets and lose a little weight and then all of a sudden all the weight would come back. Through all this I ended up at a pain doctor as my back went out, all the ligaments loosened up and my back swings free (pure pain). I was told that I probably had Epstein Barr, which wasn't helping anything. So, I was switched to every SSRI that was out there, with the result that none of them worked to help my depression. I was of course taken off of the Elavil. Finally my Rhuemotologist and knee surgeon told me they were going to do one of those stomach band operations on me to lose the weight if I couldn't do it myself. By then i was down to one Paxil (20mg) and trying to use different sleeping pills, none of which work. I ended up going on Atkins diet and lost a lot of weight, what a relief. It has been 5 years now, I have used Atkin, switched for awhile to Weight Watchers, and finally South Beach Diet and finally managed to lose all the weight. Well, I did lose all the weight, but got really depressed and put on about 10 pounds, but am now back on a diet and losing again and know I will be back to my low weight soon. I screwed up my medicines, my fault and that's why I put on the weight. I can't blame anyone else this time around. So, I've given you a long saga here, but shown you that with more problems then you have I've managed to get myself back, weightwise to myself, or close to it. I was up to a size 22 and am now about a size 10 or 12, and look damn good in jeans and leggings (I'm a tall woman), so it can be done. I'm still sick and I sleep most of the day and have trouble at night, and now have psorosis on the base of my feet, ugh, so life sucks. But, what I suggest is that you sit down with your doctor and talk about all the medicine you have taken and decide on a plan to get you off of most of what you are taking. I'm not a doctor, but can only go by what I've been through. So, I say the best thing for you is to get you on the lowest value possible of effexxor if that is the drug that is the best for you, and leave it at that. Let your body get accustommed to that. Then, if you need to add to that do it slowly, but do use as little as possible. Try and stay away from the sleeping drugs, try to do something like excercise before you try to go to sleep to knock yourself out. Try anything to stay off of the medicines that put on the weight. You are at the weight where you can go to one of the clinics where they do some of the different stomach stapling. A friend of mine did something with a removable rubberband that worked wonders for her. She lost over a hundred pounds in about a year. I can't believe the difference. For her it worked, while I have another friend who did the original stapling and it didn't work. Good luck, talk to your doctor, he is really the only one who can help you work your way through this. And remember, if he doesn't really help, he is not the only one out there, you can always change doctors and find someone who will really be there for you and understand how important weight is for us. It can be the most important thing in our lives. I wish you the luck that I have had, but hope it doesn't take you as long, except that I know I did it the right way slow and steady. South Beach was the best by the way."

ladybug replied: "I could have written your post. Wasted seven years going to doctors, taking whatever they gave me, trusting whatever they said...I gained 95 lbs in 2 years...which, like you...isn't normal for me. The one main thing all the doctors said and I never believed was...antidepressants don't make you gain weight. Well, they are right. Unfortunately, what they don't tell you because they don't know...or care to know....is that ADs suck lots of vitamins out of you, creating a nutritional imbalance, which can turn in to a hormone imbalance, significant illnesses, which just domino into other illnesses...etc. If you ever want to get off the antidepressants, stop gaining weight and fix the PROBLEM instead of fixing SYMPTOMS...see a doctor like mine... You will feel better, the weight will drop off. It's crazy but true. You have to be an advocate for yourself...there is no one else who cares more about what you're dealing with than YOU. Mainstream conventional doctors don't treat or know how to treat what your underlying issues are. They are taught in med school to push antidepressants on you if you give more than one symptom! DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!!! :) Good luck."

Kat replied: "I feel bad that you have to be on so many meds. and are so young. I'm wondering if they can cut you back somewhere. I have never taken Remeron, Restoril works for me. I take Effexor and it put a little weight on me but I can deal with getting it off and I'd rather have it and feel well mentally. Being overweight can cause depression too. Talk to your Dr about all the different meds, and see if he can either cut or change some, have him give you a exercise program and change your way of eating, I don't like the word diet so I just change my way of eating. Don't ever be ashamed of yourself unless you have done something to deserve it, and gaining weight does not."

mark f replied: "You have a somewhat complicated history. From what I can gather from the information that you have given is that your sleep problems were innitially drug enduced. I wonder if you had a normal sleep pattern or reasonably normal before taking these various meds. What I would say is that you should not stop taking a medication that your body has been used to taking, if you have taken it longer than a month or 2. You can get rebound insomnia not to mention many other withdrawal or discontinuation effects such as anxiety, panic, depression etc. Restoril is a benzodiazepine and ambien and lunesta are benzo like in how they work. They all have a dependency/tolerance and withdrawal problems assocaited with them. Here is a site with more information"

Cheryl W replied: "I wish I could answer this question for you. I have gained weight steadily on Depakote and Lexapro over the past few years, but have seemed to peak at 196 for a while now. The problem is, that's 40 pds more than I should weight. I seem to be stuck there. I do know this, when I started WALKING and watching what I ate, and FIGHTING the weight GAIN, I stopped gaining, and started toning. The problem is, I can' t seem to KEEP going. Don't take your weight-gain is FATE, fight it!! Get movin, watch what you put in your mouth. I have had doctors tell me over and over, that's it's not the meds that are doing it, well, bull-pucky...I don't believe that...but I also don't believe I'm doomed t an either "no meds" or "meds and fat" death sentence. These meds have changed my and my family's life. I'm looking for alternative ways as well to lose weight."

What anti-depressant to use??!!? Hey ppl! I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I am a 22 yr old male who has been taking remeron for depression and social anxiety for nearly a year but lately have been feeling very depressed and anxious! My doc has prescribed lexapro 20 mg but i am very apprehensive to take it! I'm scared of the side effects especially potential insomnia and hair loss! My doc says the hair loss thing is exceptionally rare but I'm so paranoid about it! Remeron helps me to sleep but lately even that has not been great. It seems to do little for my social anxiety and I have been very withdrawn recently . I also think remeron seems to make me feel a bit stupid! I mean I find it hard to concentrate and digest information whilst on it! Is this possible or just my imagination? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

BrandyJo replied: "Quit taking everything they tell you to take they are messing you up even worse you need to get some self motivation and help yourself help yourself."

123abc replied: "Marco, there are many different meds out there for this problem. But sometimes it takes awhile to find the right drug or combination of drugs for you. If you feel that something is not working, then call your doctor and discuss it with them. They will slowly wean you off one drug then slowly introduce another. And remember that these drugs do take about 4 weeks to totally do their thing so don't expect results overnight. Good luck to you."

lexapro weight gain? I really need to gain weight. I have been on Prozac in the past for panic attacks, I felt great but the weight dropped down 10 lbs in the first month. Now the doctor wants me to try Lexapro, for my panic attacks. I would like to try it but I am afraid I will lose weight again. Right now I am at 96 lbs. I need to put on a good 20 lbs. Sure would like some feed back on this. I really need some help with the weight problem. I eat but I guess I burn it off with the stress and worries. All members of my family are on the thin side, but there was a time when I was up to 135... I miss those days. The only thing I feel depressed about is my weight. Panic attacks run in my family and I have been a victim of dom violence, since the dom violence my panic attacks come and go. I have received a lot of help with this issue but my weight is still to low. I have even tried remeron, it helped a bit. If I start the lexapro, how long will it take until I know if it will help my weight problem?

aderifield replied: "i gained 35 lbs on lexapro in 6 mo. - ugh"

fax290 replied: "I have taking both Lexapro and Prozac (in that order) for panic attacks as well and neither affected my weight. It might not be the medication, but just your body. One a side note as well, neither of these medications made me feel better or worse. Instead of switching to Lexapro try weening yourself off of any anxiety medication (By the way- Lexapro is no more effective in higher doses than lower doses, your mg dosage only depends on your weight). If you stop using these medications that may be causing you to lose weight, you could focus on a strict diet to gain those 20lbs. Obviously check with your doctor first though, I'm only going from my experience."

Lestats Night replied: "Hey, my doctor prescribed Pexeva AKA paxil for me and its making me gain weight. Like you im skinny and wanna gain more weight even if its fat weight. They gave pexeva to me for social anxiety, but I noticed that im gaining weight "Which was a plus" Ive been on it for 3 weeks so I hope i keep gaining weight. Talk to your doctor about pexeva, trust me, it will help you gain weight even if you have a high metabolism like me."

fullofsmiles04 replied: "My doctor put me on Lexapro about a month or 2 ago. I don't feel like I have not gained any weight from it but you need to focus on the anti depressant too! You should snack often between meals and maybe even drink nutritional shakes between meals that will help with your calorie in take too. Good luck!! A fat women!!"

Tamela K replied: "i was on lexapro for 6 months and gained 35 pounds without changing my diet at all.I also have a few friends that have did the same thing.so my answer is yes"

spiderhedron replied: "I take Lexapro, and I've put on a few (dozen) pounds over the last few years. My advice is to take your doctor's advice. Also ask him for Xanax (if you don't already have some) to take during acute panic attacks."

Sparkles replied: "I gained a total of 42 lbs on Lexapro. I was 129 lbs when I started and a whopping 172+1 or 2 at the moment. Because of the weight gain my Doctor switched me to Cymbalta. I have just weened off of the Lexapro, it took 2 months to do so. I pray that I can start losing weight now. I never changed the way I ate or daily regimen during the whole time I was on Lexapro. I stay very busy and only ate once a day. I had a lot of blood work done and everything came out normal so my Doctor said it was the Lexapro. It effects people in different ways. I just want to be healthy and not add to other health problems related to weight. Good luck on your journey."
