Changing from Effexor to Lexapro. Are these side effects normal? I have been taking Effexor 300mg for the past year or so, and currently just changed to Lexapro 10mg. The reason for changing is only because I cant afford Effexor anymore (no more govt. subsidy on that, otherwise I was doing fine with it). I have taken Lexapro in the past, a while before I took Effexor. It worked quite well on me back then. Anyway, this is like, my 2nd week on Lexapro. The first few days was awful and it felt as though I didnt take any meds at all (feelings of jittery, shaking inside...). Now, I dont feel much depression, but I feel tired ALL THE TIME. I can sleep the whole day and still feel tired. My eyes are always tired and I always feel sleepy, no matter how much I sleep, or if I just woke up. Is this a side effect from withdrawing from Effexor, or starting on Lexapro? If so, is it normal? I also feel dizzy sometimes, like my surroundings are spinning around although I am standing still and everything else is not moving. I'm not sure if this is from oversleeping or from the meds. Please help. Thanks.

savannah replied: "I would believe it to be the effexor. Please advise anyone you know not to get on this drug. The withdrawls from effexor are borderline dangerous and awful. Well, I had terrible withdrawls from it and ended up finding some nasty research and facts about it. You can google 'effexor withdrawls' and find some terrible stories from people who have been on it. It gives 'brain tremors' you could say, which is the shakeyness.... and the dizzyness. It is a normal side effect of the withdrawl, but it sucks. Mine took about a month to go away, the first week i couldn't fuction at all. The effexor wont be out of your system for a little over a month but should diminish after about a month. Not much you can do otherwise. Just try to stay away from it in the future. Not a good drug."

Rev_Hojo replied: "Sounds like that was a pretty high dose of Effexor. The Lexapro dose might be too low, or possibly the Effexor isn't all the way out of your body yet and the two drugs are interacting. If I had to guess, I'd say the fatigue is a side effect from starting on Lexapro. I was on this for about a year and had bouts of fatigue depending on what else I was doing to my body chemistry (nutrition and stress mgt). Regardless, you need to discuss this with your doctor. It will take a professional to figure out what to do."

Gard23 replied: "There are three possibilities, which may overlap: Effexor withdrawal; switchover reactions; Lexapro side-effects. I think 300mg Effexor is a higher equivalent dose than 10mg Lexapro, so the new Lexapro dose possibly wouldn't 'cover up' Effexor withdrawal. The switchover/start up effects may also be relevant since agitation-like reactions may be amongst those experienced. Fatigue can be either linked to withdrawal or side-effects... so I'm afraid that doesn't help in pinning down the culprit, although the equivalent dose drop in medication might point to withdrawal being significantly involved; however some people do manage to stop Effexor without difficulties, so although it's likely that Effexor withdrawal is involved, it's not certain, so the switchover/start-up reactions are also quite valid. Dizziness is one of the classic withdrawal symptoms, but again, it's quite possible it has something to do with the other two possibilities. One to discuss with your doctor?"

lexapro withdraw, can't take it anymore.....? I quit cold turkey and have been off of it for two weeks straight. I feel like a big baby because I didn't have horrible side effects of withdraw and finally took my lex today. I wasn't severely depressed but in the past few days I've put on weight b/c I've stayed at home a lot not wanting to go out and not feeling motivated to even clean up after myself without lex. (My room is a mess!) I've read about people who have horrible withdraw effects like bad headaches and nausea and my symptoms haven't been horribly bad. I wish I could quit taking it. The only reason I tried to quit is because it made my vocal chords feel tense when I sang and I am a musician. In other ways, mentally it def. helped my confidence and ability to be more active and on the ball with everyday events and responsibilities. I just wish I didn't have to be dependent on a med. I mean, people in the 1800's didn't have anti-depressants and they survived somehow. Do we have higher expectations today? I

angelgirl replied: "I can so relate to you .I feel exactly the same way. I am currently thinking about whether I should go back on lexapro. I ate dark chocolate coming off. It seemed to help some. But hey I'm in the same boat."

abbsp10 replied: "I def. think we have higher expectations today...I'm only an 18 year old girl, but I feel like I have had to grow up more in the past year then my parents would have ever had to worry about back in the day!! I took lexapro for a couple of months over the summer after I lost a friend in a car accident...I was on and off on and off..Sometimes I felt dependent on it, other days I just tryed to ignore that I even had it sitting in my bathroom...My stomach is always upset, but I think it did mess with it a little...I finally just told my mom to stop getting me lexapro that I didn't want to deal with it that way anymore..Everyday it crosses my mind to get back on it though, even tho my depression isn't near as bad as it was..BUt I think thats the effects of any medicine...Good luck and I hope you can find the strength to get past this!!"

seraiah monteleone replied: "i don't know what a lex is but it sounds like a anti-dressant...why you depressed?"

Has anyone had the side effects of not being able to feel deeply while being on lexapro? I dont know if its from what has happened in my life but i just can not feel deeply bout things like i use to. I feel that i dont have that deep love for my family or anyone. I always feel like I'm withdrawn. I dont know if its from the lexapro or what.

christina c replied: "it's in part due to the reason that you take the lexapro and the lexapro itself. i have taken lexapro for about 7 years now and i experience nthe same thing. you realize that you can tell your doctor about this and maybe he/she can change you to something else. personally i'd' rather feel this way than depressed."

M M T replied: "Well, I had a similar issue with being on Zoloft for an extended period of time. Nothing was black or white, it was all gray. I finally decided to wean myself off slowly and deal with what comes along rather than medication. I don't know how it will work but I'm feeling more energetic, sleeping better, not sleeping as much, more enthusiastic about things again."

Zabes replied: "Prozac made me feel that way - now I'm on Lexapro and I love it - I feel like "my old self" again."

Lexapro withdraw question I have taken Lexapro (10mg) for 3 days now and I hate it, it is giving me horrible anxiety so bad I had to call in to work today. It is also making me feel depressed. I am taking it for anxiety and I feel like it is making it worse. I have only taken it for 3 days do you think I could just stop taking it without any negative side effects?

thunder2sys replied: "would depend if 10mg is a lot or not. If you are worried about it, cut the pills in half for tomorrow, and then in 1/4 the next day. But call the Doctor right away..../"

Julie replied: "That is normal. When I went on it I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin and I couldn't sit still at work. Please ask your doctor before doing anything though - that will help you. Also, you will get a splitting headache often times from going off that med."

Paul A replied: "I've been taking Lexapro (also 10 mg) for over a year and a half. If you've only been taking it for three days, it probably wouldn't hurt you too bad if you stopped. Lexapro is a medication that takes several weeks before it reaches it's full potency. It takes that long for your system to become acclimated to it. I would talk with your doctor first - you might suggest cutting back to 5 mg for a couple weeks or so and work your way up to 10 mg. Lexapro has worked very well for me - I hope it works as well for you. Best of Luck to you :-) Paul. One more thing - When I first started taking the Lexapro, they had me taking it in the morning. That made me feel very drowsy and in a fog. The doctor had me switch it to the evening - and that works a lot better. I've also since then been taking Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning - that has helped me to be more active."

Lexapro 5 MG for 5 Days Thus Far.. Doc says its OK to stop cold. Your Take? Started taking Lexapro Last friday, so for the past 5 days I have been taking 5 MG daily. Talked to the doctor about wanting to get off the drug, and she said I can, and that no tapper schedule is needed, I could just stop.. I heard about the bad withdraw side effects and was wondering what you guys would suggest. Thank You. I was actually given Lexapro and Xanax Last friday (after my endoscopy). Past few weeks I have been having trouble eating (felt throat was tight) so my doctor prescribed these to calm me down. But by simply doubling the dose of my nexum, (one in the morning / one at night) I feel alot better and can eat. So told her I wanted to get off these pills... Plus I have been feeling a bad stomach ache in the morning which I feel is due to them..

WildBillinOTown replied: "5mg is very low dose, you should be fine. But why did you start taking it and why do you want to stop?"

kiss_n_hug1 replied: "Yes! You haven't been taking it long enough for it to be fully in your system. You will be fine. Usually you have to take the medication 2 -4 weeks for it to be in your system. I was on this at one time too. trust me. You will be fine."

MP_doc replied: "5 days isn't long enough to cause a dependence. You do not need to titrate from that. Go ahead and quit if your doctor tells you to."

Diana B replied: "I used to take Lexapro before moving to Cymbalta. I don't remember why I made the switch, but that the withdrawl (to the extent there was any) wasn't as memorable as it was w/Cymbalta or Geodon (which I had used before then)."

Is it safe to switch from lexapro to paxil? The first anti depressant i ever took was paxil i took it for 6 months and weaned myself off b/c i thought i was better. I took it for panic attacks. Then i was put on paxil cr then they took that off the shelf so i started back on paxil and then with my 2nd child they told me the things that paxil could do to my baby, never told me this with my first but i thank the Lord their both OK. With my 2nd child they put me on Zoloft after I had him the Zoloft didn't seem to work all that good so they put me on lexapro. I am ALWAYS tired and I keep reading all the bad stuff about lexapro and all the other SSRI's so I want to wean myself off of them, and i want to switch back to paxil since I've weaned myself off of it before but I've never went from lexapro to paxil so i don't know if I'm going to have any withdraws from the lexapro while taking paxil and then weaning myself off of it. Just a note to anyone else on SSRI's please read about them and you'll see how much worse they are for you than good. I'm now taking fish oil. And have 5HTP to take when Im completely off the paxil/lexapro which i know you cannot take 5HTP while on an SSRI's but it does the same as SSRI's and it only takes a few min to work, and don't have all the harsh side effects like the SSRI's I just want to be off SSRI's COMPLETELY

Crush replied: "why are you trusting strangers over the internet with the future health of your brain, there is no guarantee anyone of us has the credentials for medical advice. also, if something is prescribed to you, follow the perscrition. do not "waen yourself" off of it because you think you are better. if you feel you no longer need medication, there should be a dialogue between you and your doctor about the correct way to do such a thing"

rickyoutfield replied: "Its not safe to take any of these drugs. They effect the pituitary gland which then effects the adrenal glands which then unbalances the entire hormonal system -- thus the different and varied side effects. Depending on how your body balances, will depend on the side effects."

heBetween the 2 anti-depressants Lexapro and Effexor xr which one is better ?has the least weight gain problem? Plzzzz help ive been experiencing some depressive feeling and I have to choose between these two drugs while i know close to zero about their ACTUAL side effects ,so if uve taken ,r taking or know some info about specially weight gain issue, withdraw symptoms .. on any of these,Id greatly appreciate ur help ..tnxxxx

Lisa J replied: "I've recently been switched from Zoloft to Lexapro and the results have been amazing! Lexapro probably has the fewest side effects of any antidepressent I've ever tried. My therapist told me that Effexor has more side effects and can cause increased agitation. I haven't gained any weight on the Lexapro which is always a plus. I would definitely recommend the Lexapro. I have panic disorder with depression and it's been great for both illnesses. You should take it at night especially at the beginning of treatment because it can make you a little sleepy which is a welcome side effect for me. Good Luck!"

Dana replied: "Okay are you getting this from a doctor? Then he will be able to help you. It isn't really YOUR decision to make since your doctor will know your allergies and such and will give you the low down of both extensively. As well as if you even need the drugs or just therapy sessions, pills are not the cure all for depression and not everyone needs them. Talk to your doctor and raise these questions with him and he will know your concerns and be able to pair you with an appropriate prescription."

Lady Mala replied: "Effexor has been good to me, but I've never taken the other one. I don't even realize I'm taking it- no side effects, no weight, nothing. I've never heard that Effexor was addictive, Been on it for over a year. I got it because it helps with anxiety, too."

Himpalapotamus replied: "Try the lexapro first because it's not such a big deal to stop it no matter how long you've been taking it. Once you're on effexor for a long time, getting off of it is very difficult. With effexor, skipping a single dose can cause problems in some people."

vertigo???? ok, so i have been on lexapro 20mg for well over a year... well this was prescribed by doctor #1.. well doctor #2 wants me off lexapro and on wellbutrin xl 150. the thing is i CAN NOT quit taking my lexapro, the withdrawl is simply too much for me to handle. does anyone know if vertigo is a side effect of withdrawing from an anti-anxiety such as lexapro? i have looked all over the internet and can't find much info.

8 bit fit replied: "i dont know but u might have hypertension"

The warden replied: "I didn't have trouble getting off the lexapro, but I did go down to the 10mg for awhile. They started the wellbutrin 150 while I was cutting down on the lexapro. It really didn't have many side affects to begin with. Go for the switch. The wellbutrin was way better."

lana s replied: "You shouldn't have withdrawal going directly to another like welbutrin. Just call the Dr. office and ask the nurse and problem solved. I have been from one to another for 2 years and never experienced withdrawals.==="

Donna Darko replied: "I've tried a bunch of different meds. Celexa (cousin of Lexapro) made me dizzy upon attempting to go on it- so, sure, I would say dizziness upon going off is a likely possibility. Dizziness is a side effect of all those meds- look on the package inserts. I'm on nothing now- and okay with that:)"

oramac replied: "Lexapro is an anti-depressant..check out this web site: . It might answer a lot of your questions about lexapro and wellbutrin..I took lexapro for a year and I had withdrawals...I would listen to doctor#2...take care..."

i just stop tacking lexapro? i stoped tacking lexapro a week and a half ago. now i think im going thru withdraws. i weened of the meds over a month. whenever i move my head i feel light headed. the feeling is hard to explain. the closest i can come to explaining how it feel is that my brain feels sloshy every time i stand or move my head. is anyone else out there familiar with what i think is a side effect and if so how long will the feeling take to go away, or what can i do to make it better

country mom replied: "If your worried talk with your doc. may not be the lexapro"

Alyssa replied: "first of all, were you supposed to stop taking it? i take lexapro and when i don't take it thats what happens. i would gradually reduce the amount you take each day if you are supposed to stop taking it."

Did my doctor lie....? i went doc, and rx me Lexapro, and i asked if i take for 1 month and stop nothing will happen to me, and he said yes.. no withdraw effects...but on i searched on Y!A people said they had alot of side effects when stopping medication? WTF?

cachan replied: "pharmacists tend to have a greater knowledge of drugs, side effects etc than doctors....so if you have a question re: side effects, go to any pharmacist and ask. Do not say you think your doctor lied. Just ask your questions and leave the doctor out of it. In most western countries doctors are bound by ethics not to lie, but that doesn't mean they have all the answers. They often believe what the pharmaceuticals who sell them the stuff tell them about it. (sorry if I make any doctors mad, but the experts re: medication are the pharmacists....)"

Doctor B replied: "Yep, if an antidepressant works there will rpobably be a withdrawal symptom. But it is usually minor."

Az R replied: "Withdrawal from antidepressants, especially gentler ones like lexapro is very rare. When it is present, it's rather minor. It's quite unusual for it to be anything more than transiently unpleasant."

l_sarmento replied: "When I stopped taking it I was just really emotional for a couple of days. Kinda like extreme PMS, lol. It wasn't bad though. Definately check with a pharmacist though."

Emily the Scientist replied: "Yes, run it past a pharmacist. Each person's experience with anxiety and Lexapro can vary so go and have a chat with your local pharmacist. That's what they're there for. =)"

Da Vinci replied: "All these answers are pretty good. But I'm going to tell you something that will blow your mind! Perhaps you did need that drug you were prescribed. However, your doctor probably got a serious 'kick-back' by prescribing it to you. You see, all these big pharmaceutical company's pay doctors to prescribe drugs to their patients. It's like a bonus for doctors (like they don't make enough already!) Now don't get me wrong, doctors aren't just handing these prescriptions out like their candy. There should be just cause. But going to your doctor and having them prescribe you medication is essentially like walking onto a car lot to buy a car. Do you trust the salesperson 100%? Probably not. All I'm saying is look for other options too? Have you tried a naturopathic doctor? These doctors actually try to find the route of their patients deeper problem versus prescribing a temporary chemical fix to the problem."
