Amoxicillin + Penicillin allergy? Yesterday I got antibiotics after getting my wisdom teeth out (which I"m supposed to start taking today), the nurse asked if I had a penicillin allergy, and I told her I'd never had penicillin before, but I've had amoxicillin. If I was OK taking amoxicillin, is it likely I will be OK with the penicillin as well or are they completely different? (I think they are in the same family?)

Esmerelda replied: "Allergies are funny things. You can take something for your entire life and then suddenly develop an allergy to it. Likewise, you can take it once and be fine, and not so the next time. Having taken amoxicillin, you should be OK with the penicillin since they are in the same antiobiotic family. You could call your medical doctor, or your pharmacist/chemist for an opinion, as well. You really shouldn't put off taking the medication. You don't want the surgery site to become infected. Wisdom teeth removal is enough of an event without infection or some other problem setting in. Good Luck"

K Daring replied: "It is the same so it will be OK."

If someone has a penicillin, amoxicillin and cephalosporin allergy, is there anything that can't be treated? Are there any conditions or diseases that can't be treated with other types of antibiotics?

Anonymous Viking Reborn replied: "There are lots of different kinds of antibiotics. I doubt it."

ckm1956 replied: "Those allergies do limit your options, but there are many alternatives. Oral alternatives could include macrolides, sulfa drugs, and later quinalones. IV alternatives include carbepenems, macrolides, sulfas, quinalones, and vancomycin."

My girlfriend has a severe penicillin allergy, i've taken amoxicillin, can i kiss her? I have an ear infection and i have to take an antibiotic called amoxicillin, i was wondering if i would be able to kiss her, i haven't risked it yet but i'd like to know just in case because i kinda don't wanna kill her :(

versantly replied: "without knowing the severity of her reaction, it would be prudent to kiss her on the cheek."

drumbum replied: "Please don't! It dpends on how severe her allergy is."

should I specify that my son is allergic to amoxicillin if he is already allergic to penicillin? believe it or not, a pharmacist once tried to tell me that amoxicillin is safe if a child is allergic to penicillin. it was amoxicillin he had the reaction to when he was a baby but they said it was a penicillin allergy.

Severely Insane replied: "You really should not need to specify. That pharmacist was obviously an idiot. I am allergic to penicillin and never have once had to specify both. Amoxicillin is made from penicillin so anyone you talk to should already know that"

MC replied: "I think amoxicillin is one type of penicillin."

SweetStarling replied: "That pharmacist is out of their mind. Amoxicillin is in the same family of medications as penicillin. I'm allergic to penicillin and must be very careful too. The pharmacist should have known. DEFINITELY. You should not have to specify that."

John de Witt replied: "No, that is redundant. In defense of the pharmacist, not an easy task, I'd have to point out that most kids who have an amoxicillin rash and are subsequently labelled as "penicillin-allergic" have the rash for other reasons, and aren't allergic at all."

i'm allergic to amoxicillin, penicillin, sulfa, and clyndamycin... should i get an allergy necklace/bracelet? I am 18 years old and am allergic to thesemedications... I was just wondering i you think it is necessary for me to get med identification and why.. thank you

hssmith_45 replied: "Yes those are some drugs that are often used a lot, so I would."

Sarah B replied: "I'd suggest getting one purely due to the fact that if you can't speak for yourself about these allergies, you could be given these meds, resulting in a sever reaction. I'd suggest bracelet, neck tag and a list in your wallet as well. You NEVER know what could happen. Better to have it and not need it than not and suffer an allergic reaction."

â–ºBobBâ—„ replied: "YES! those are some of the most common anti-biotics, so you should wear a bracelet, just incase you are unable to speak after an accident."

If I am allergic to Amoxicillin (Penicillin) and Zythromax, do I have a greater risk of being allergic to...? I am allergic to Amoxicillin (Penicillin) and Zythromax, so my doctor prescribed a Sulfur Antibiotic (Bactrim - the generic kind) for my sinus infection. However, upon looking at the listed possible reactions/side effects, I am hesitant to take it considering my previous histories of allergies to antibiotics. Does my previous allergies increase my risk for being allergic to Sulfur Antibiotics?

S P replied: "It shouldn't. Sulfur and Cillin antibiotics are totally different."

Beenthere4sure replied: "Just ideas 1.Boost your immune system with natural foods,and/or whole food supplements such as vitamins and minerals. 2. Have your Dr. check you for allergies you may need shots or meds for. 3.If the infection isn't severe I believe it is best to let the body fight the infection on it's own because it is amazing in balancing itself when healthy and often even when not and it will strengthen itself against later possible infection causers. 4. Look into Robotics for natural antibiotics. I have a problem with antibiotics myself and feel we get too many through our meat and dairy which is causing bacterial strains to become resistant to medical antibiotics and all kinds of other problems. If they don't make me sick they destroy my good bacteria and create infection in another place and the last time I took them my mouth broke out in sores so bad I couldn't hardly eat anything and I felt really irritable ( No more for me unless it is something really severe and nothing else will work )!!! Sorry so long and Good Luck."

Can you be allergic to penicillin and not amoxicillin? I had taken amoxicillin a couple times during the year, then I about a month after the last time I took amoxicillin, I got penicillin and then had an allergic reaction. I've never had any other allergy whatsoever as far as I know. At that point I hadn't taken penicillin ever that I could remember, so if I'd taken it before it would have been when I was a very young child. So they say I'm allergic to amoxicillin too, because it's in the same class of antibiotics... I know that's probable, but is it always the case? I definitely had no reaction to the amoxicillin when I took it a month before, but I haven't taken it since taking the penicillin (because they won't give it to me because of that allergy!). So, is it possible to be allergic to JUST penicillin? Or is it always the case that people allergic to penicillin are allergic to amoxicillin too?

Ryan D replied: "It is possible"

susan replied: "I am unable to take penicillin but I can take amoxicillin!!!"

everlasting_matchstick replied: "Yes my aunt is allergic to penicillin but no amoxicillion. But if you take anything with penicillin you can break out."

Doctor J replied: "If you are allergic to penicillin, there's a good chance you will be allergic to amoxicillin as well. An allergic reaction to penicillin may be something as benign as rashes or it could be as severe as anaphylactic shock which could kill you. It's just not worth to take a chance that you might not be allergic to amoxicillin based on your earlier uneventful intake. Besides, something might have triggered your allergic reactions when you were not allergic before. My daughter previously had no allergy to eggs and she was able to take them but she developed an allergy after several months. Don't risk your life on this. There are so many other antibiotics to choose from."

PUNCHBUG replied: "If the allergic reaction was a rash, swelling, shortness of breath, or something along those lines than yes I say you are allergic to both. Just because you take an antibiotic once does not mean that the next time you take it you won't have a reaction. If you have a mild reaction to a medication the next time you take the medication the reaction will get more servere. Personally, I had a 1 in 10 chance of reacting to 2 drugs in the same family, I ended up in the Emergency Room."

Jack D replied: "No, if you are allergic to one beta lactam, you are going to allergic to all beta lactams. Avoid them like the plague."

t0m_s_1 replied: "until not long ago, i didnt know i was allergic to anything until they found i was allergic to flucloxacillin (part of the pennicillin family) and then they found i had a very rare allergic reaction to another antibiotic called clyndmyacin. My twin sisters alloergic to amoxicillin as well so the guessed im alelrgic to all of them. I guess it just luck of the draw and we're the ones that have drawn the short straw"

Melissa replied: "People are allergic to penicillin, and therefore take amoxicillian as a back up. Mostly, they are just allergic to penicillin and not amoxicillian. That's why they mostly prescribe amoxicillian."

can you develop a allergy reaction to penicillin after 7 days of taking the medicine? i was taking amoxicillin 500mg and 7 days later i develop a rash all over my body. Can this be a allergy reaccion to penicillin? also im 5 months pregnant

max replied: "no, it was from something else"

davelennv replied: "It is possibly the penicillin as it has gotten into your system. In other words, on day 1 you have so many milligrams in your system. When you take the next dose, you have another so many milligrams in your system added to the first dose. This continues on and on. What I would do is go to the hospital and let them evaluate you especially since it is all over your body. Also discontinue the penicillin, until you find out if it is the cause of the rash"

lilprincesstif replied: "Dave has it. The medicine takes 2 days to get in your system and yes you can be allergic to the medicine within 7 days. My cousin had this problem she's only 10. I'm allergic to penicillin has well and when I was little I broke out with hives within 48hours of taking the meds."

Ebony replied: "Yes it can. Delayed hypersensitivity do occur. This means that the body is producing antibodies which bind and agglutinate the antibiotics. This complex might be the cause of the allergic reaction. Antibodies need an average of 5-7 days to be produced and our body innate responses also need time to recognise the pathogens. You should best talk to your doctor and he might give you other families of antibiotics."

mz. february replied: "yes, my friend broke out with a severe itchy rash all over her neck after the 6th day of Augmentin ( a generic form of Penicillan) . Allergy specialist said she was allergic to it."

Lori F replied: "Yes!! I developed hives from penicillin when I was in my 30's. I had hives for nine days. Usually benadryl helps, but since you are pregnant you'll have to ask your doctor if you can take it. Tell your doctor right away about the reaction. You probably won't ever be able to take it again. I have to wear a medical alert bracelet stating that I am allergic to penicillin. Good Luck with that and your baby!"

Question about my son's penicillin? Would they have a reaction to it if you were Group B + (and had penicillin during labour)? My son has strept throat and was prescribed Amoxicillin today. I JUST gave him his 1st dose, but am watching him like a hawk since penicillin/amoxicillin allergies run in the family. However, I was Group B + and had SEVERAL doses of penicillin via IV during my labour. IF he was allergic, wouldnt he have already reacted to the medication I was given? I am crossing my fingers that it is ok, but this is a scary one for me since the family allergies are VERY severe and would result in death! All advice appreciated!! Greydoc...I was hoping you would answer this!! lol... he did do a culture but has not completely ruled our Roseola so because the throat got worse overnight and there is still no rash (but we are not expecting one until at least tomorrow) he went with the strep. We'll know Monday, but because tomorrow nothing (besides the hospital) is open, he didnt want to chance it that he got worse overnight (again). I do suspect the strep, you can 'smell' it on his breath.

Tomasz W replied: "Allergies aren't present from birth and can develop at any stage of life. Particular allergies are not genetic, just susceptibility to allergies in general is - so if you are allergic to something, it increases your child's chances of developing allergies to something at some point in his life, but it doesn't have to be the same thing, and it won't be present at birth. So the answer is no - the fact that you got penicillin during labour and he didn't react doesn't prove anything."

checkmetryme replied: "allergies are dangerous to a new or a regualar baby. I recommend asking a doctor or health care proffesional. you cant let this go into lucks hands."

Gemma B replied: "I would check with a doctor about penicillin. Although you had doses of penicillin during labour, I do not think that the child would inherit the allergy. I would check though because if it runs through the family there could be a possibility. There could also be severe consequences if he does react towards it, it could result in anaphalactic shock."

scat201 replied: "if he was to have an allergic reaction it tends to have happened within the first 15 minutes of administering the drug. if after the first 15 minutes he hasn't reacted and even after if he hasn't reacted in a few hours time he probably does not have an allergy. This is not always the case though and people can form allergies after having a drug a few times. Talk with your doctor about your concerns and in future if you are prescribed a drug for your child that you are concerned about get the prescription from the pharmacy and then administer the first dose of the drug back at your doctors office. you will then know that if he does react then there are people around with the equipment necessary to deal with the situation."

greydoc6 replied: "True penicillin reactions usually do not occur with the first course of the medicine. A person needs to be sensitized to it first. But you make a good point. Would the penicillin you received for GBS while your son was still in utero sensitize him to it? I think the chances are low, but not impossible. Given your family history, your doctor should not give antibiotics willy nilly. (I'm not saying that's what he or she did.) Ask for a throat culture or rapid strep test before putting him on antibiotic. Depending on age and severity of infection, don't treat every ear infection with antibiotics. Many will subside without them. The Prevnar 7-valent vaccine against strains of pneumococcus is standard. A lot of people on this site are against immunizations. This is one you should strongly consider."

I am crossing my fingers that it is ok, but this is a scary one for me since the family allergies are VERY severe and would result in death! All advice appreciated!! whoops, he is 8.5 months old Carrie: Group B Strep is a bacterial found in the vagina. It can make a baby sick when you deliver. It is VERY easily treated (Via IV) so baby doesnt get it. Of course I told the doctor, I'm not stupid. And IF he had a reaction what do you think I'm going to do?? Leave him outside?? Hospital!!! If you cant answer, please dont! Megyvette...cool thanks!! That was EXACTLY what I was looking for!!

♥Corys Mummy♥ replied: "I have a penicillin allergy, my partner has a penicillin allergy, and both of our granddads have a penicillin allergy LOL, but our son doesn't. We was told by the doctors it isn't heredity, but i think maybe they should do a little more research into that considering."

Megyvette replied: "I don't think so, my son was allergic to penecilin, he was prescribed it for an ear infection when he was eight months and he broke out in a prickly rash, I was also strep b + in my pregnancy with him and the meds they gave me for it had no effect on him ."
