Antidepressant Trazodone in Questions
What is worse for you-Diphenydramine(an over the counter sleep aid -Benadryl) or Trazodone(an antidepressant)? I have really bad insomnia..especially when I worry about things and Trazodone helps me sleep and is approved by the psychiatrist, but I have been told that Trazodone is not good for you.

A.C.M replied: "This would be worse for you IMO... Trazodone While Diphenydramine takes a bit longer it works wonders, I use it and have never had any issues."

The LG replied: "I can't give you real medical advice as I am not a doctor. However, I don't trust these anti-depressants and their kin. They are now often prescribing the anti-psychotic drug Seroquel to people who suffer from insomnia because one of its side effects is sleepiness. Despite the fact that they are not schizophrenic. As far as I am concerned, this is mis-use of a medication for other than it's intended purpose: to treat psychotic illness. This drug has many serious side effects, including diabetes. This doesn't apply to Trazodone however Overall, I would think the over the counter sleep aid (which I do take) would be much safer so long as you do not exceed the recommended dosage without consulting your physician."

Suggestions for side effect from taking trazodone(antidepressant)? My doctor just prescribed me trazodone for insomnia, not depression. It works very well for me (no bad side effects) except for nasal congestion. It puts me to sleep, but i woke up in the middle of the night because my nose was clogged up from it. Any suggestions thats safe to use with it that can help me? Thanks!!

mah replied: "I dab a little vaseline on the tissue in my nostrils, this helps to keep my nose moist."

what is IC Trazodone? on line it says it is an antidepressant, i was told it is Valium. ? i know Valium is called diazepam that is were my confusion came in. why would the bottle say IC Trazodone if its supposed to be diazepam...

Panda Lover replied: "Trazodone is an antidepressant also called Desyrel"

Anyone else taking trazodone(antidepressant) for insomnia? Im prescribed Adderall 40mg for ADD, and it hasnt been working for a few weeks. My doctor thinks the reason is because i only get a few hours of sleep at night, so instead of sleeping aids like ambien, she prescribed me trazadone so i can use it everynight for the Adderall to work. I was reading the pamphelt i got from the pharmacy, and it just seems that trazadone is really bad, i mean, its used for insomnia at times, but the warnings/side effects are much worse than the adderall. Do you think taking a drug that seems really scary and weird, is it really worth all of the side effects everynight just to sleep? PS- Adderall 40mg is the max dose...so she cant change the dose to a higher one

ShortcutHerbal Goody replied: "It is too risky! There is a safer solution: A herb called Valerian although it does have a side effect if you take too much makes you smell bad! Well that makes sense cause it is stinky smelling! Valerian tea knocks me out like a light! Some people need more than others! If the tea form don't work get the capsule form the unwatered down version! The watered down versions are crap! I'm Herbalist #6B008"

Dalton replied: "i take it best one out their i love it im not groggy in the morning dont wake up in the middle of the night perfect sleep i started taking it for the same reason as you if the trazadone doesent help then you will need to be switched to vyvance"

Can I take a sedating antidepressant and an antihistamine at the same time without any adverse effects? Sorry if it's a stupid question. I'm pretty sure I can take them both. I'm just obsessing. Also, sorry if there isn't enough information. =/ I took some Cetirizine and Trazodone, to be specific.

Joey replied: "They will have cumulative effects. You will be more drowsy before you sleep (just like if you took Sudafed), you will sleep longer and possibly be more groggy when you wake up. It all depends on the dosage you take. Taking them together in a healthy adult would probably have only these side effects, of course it depends on the dosage you take as well. You won't stop breathing though in the night if that's what you're worried about."

bubbles replied: "ask your pharamist he will know for sure."

Should I request a referral to a psychiatrist? I have a long-standing anxiety disorder since the age of 16. I'm almost 24 and it still isn't sorted. I have tried many medications: paroxetine, citalopram, sertraline. I currently take propranolol (beta blocker) and trazodone (antidepressant) daily. I think my symptoms have improved with my current prescriptions but are far from being resolved. Perhaps a referral to a psychiatrist could be beneficial. I used to think this was an extreme, so I've avoided it. Maybe I should just keep plugging away?

Hannah replied: "See a psychiatrist.. whats the worse that can happen?"

patricia c replied: "what has taken so long?do it !"

sweet.caroline replied: "A psychiatrist mainly gives prescriptions. I don't know if you need that or if you need a psycologist - someone to talk to about our anxiety disorders and how you feel about things. it is a great stress reducer. However, if you need a change in the medicatins, you may need a psychiatrist. Try not to allow a complete change in meds but to take it easy a bit at a time. I only say that as my husband had a problem and we had moved and he needed a psychiatrist. During the tretment he was given Geodon which was not to be taken by someone with atrial fibrillation and he had atrial fibrillation. We have had problems since then. But instead of tweaking the meds a bit and changing one thing, he took him off all his old meds and put him on new things and that really screwed him up and we have been dealing with the aftermath and allthe med problems sine then. I hate to scare you as i frmly believe in medication, but I know he is over medicated now. It seems tht some doctors want you on new stuff just because it is new or because the pharmaseutical ompanies recommend it. It is better to have an adjustment, as you call it, and not a complete throw out te old. It is hard to go back too. Some of the meds he was on are now impacted by other problems that have ocurred. So, if your medications are working pretty well, whoever presribed them for you might be able to tweakthem. You can try a psychoogist to seeif tht will help, but if you do need a medication change you can get that referralto psychiatrist. I just looked up and found a doctor wo was on my medical plan and cloe to us. I'd get a referral from a doctor I trust in the futue. Good luck in gettng waht you need. We are still working on it with my husband. He had his thyroid removed and his meds there are not up to par and he wanted that straightened out before he made any more changes. But he is having trouble with water retention and compulsive eating. didn't have that on his old lithium and wellbutrinand trazadone. Now he can't take the lithium as he is on lasix for water retention. But we do hope to get it all owrked out eventually. Good luck to you. If your family tell you you are over medicaed then you should probably tell that to the psychiatrist as they may be able to see things you can't see."

What will happen if I take just one trazodone right now? Never taken any antidepressants before, it's not prescribed to me.

David replied: "You'll become sleepy and fall asleep... that's it. There's no point to it."

DOMii replied: "like for sleep or anti depresants?? sleep i take it for sleep and i i have 50mg and i take half if it is past 10pm and 1/4 if it is past 11 but it will amke you sleep latee so do not take it to late if you have sleeping problems anti depressants look on and go onto the pill identifiyer"

Poisongurl.. replied: "if you like to sleep for 3 months those are ideal to have-"

nivlacizer replied: "probably nothing alot of anti depressants work directly with other meds like go hand in hand also it has to build up over time so it doesnt just give you a direct effect from experience but i may be wrong.. google it."

ashlee c replied: "why would you take it if its not prescribed to you thats just idiotic and it will absolutely not get you high in anyway just make ya a lil sleepy"

Can I take Trazodone with paxil AKA pexeva? My doctor gave me pexeva for anxiety but It cosed me not to get a good night sleep. So she gave me Trazodone as well afterward. But they are both antidepressants? HELP! I know if I take to of the wrong anti deps I can Die??!

EDtherapist replied: "Trazodone is often prescribed for sleep, and can be taken in combination with an antidepressant. In fact, I've never had a patient take Trazodone alone for depression....it is commonly prescribed to help with insomnia. You should be fine. Your doctor wouldn't have prescribed it if he/she was concerned about interactions, but if it is making you anxious, give him/her a call and talk about it. Hope you get some sleep! :)"

Sabel Panzram replied: "take the traz as directed by your doctor, before bed (an hour or so before, dont drive or do anything dangerous on it) and take the right dose ( usually between 50 to 100 milligrams). it wont be dangerous, trazadone is usually not so effective as an antidepressant, that is why it is mostly prescribed for sleep these day."

baghdadcatcash replied: "hullo it is not a good practice to be on two anti depressants on the same time,it will not lead to death, but potentiation of side effects only, still poly pharmacy may be used only in refractory depression. Dr solo"

DepressionAwareness replied: "I have taken Trazadone along with Prozac...but everyone's case is different. The best thing to do is contact your doctor or pharmacist. They are trained professionals, and will have the right answer for you."
