Does benzoyl peroxide cause premature aging? I have read recently that benzoyl peroxide causes free radicals which in turn causes premature aging of the skin. Does anyone know if this is true? The sites where I read this seemed a little sketchy and seemed to be making this claim so that people will buy their anti-acne products. I have suffered from acne since I was 12 (I'm 23) and have been using benzoyl peroxide products for years. I don't want to have prematurely aged skin! I'm concerned about this. Also, I use an SPF facial moisturizer daily... will this help counteract the possible premature aging effects?

eliebellie replied: "When you use benzoyl peroxide you burn off a protective layer of your skin, a layer that would normally be a barrier to protect you from bacteria, dehydration, and UV rays of the sun. The reason it works to fight acne is because that’s the layer where acne surfaces from. When you stop using a benzoyl peroxide product your skin is left defenseless so you break out even worse because your natural defense system was burned off. So, you need more benzoyl peroxide product to keep the bacteria dead, while it kills more of your own cells. Not only will this cause premature aging but you might also have a seriously high risk of skin cancer."

How can I reverse photosensitivty caused by Benzoyl Peroxide? I have mild acne. I used Benzoyl Peroxide 5% throughout the winter and it worked very well. However, now that it's spring, I've been out in the sun more and it causes me to break out in very small pimples on my cheeks and forehead. (Which is where I was applying the cream.) I now know that Benzoyl Peroxide causes free radical damage to the skin and can cause photosensitivity so I've stopped using it. But still, the slightest bit of sun aggravates my skin to break out into this pimple-esque rash. It's not itchy, and does not hurt. I enjoy being outdoors very much and do not wish to avoid the sun completely. If anyone knows of a way to revitalize skin after Benzoyl Peroxide damage, it would be so helpful!

Buddy replied: "That New Zealand honey I forget the name my sister uses it and swears by it. She jsut puts it on the pimples before bed and they are gone in the morning"

confused replied: "stop using it"

Andrew D replied: "Depending on how long it's been since you've stopped using benzoyl peroxide, this sounds more like a true photosensitivity reaction that's not caused by benzoyl peroxide. A benzoyl peroxide sensitivity would really just cause you to burn -- not to breakout in a rash post-exposure to the sun. You might be developing rosacea. Sun exposure is a trigger for rosacea flare-ups. Also, there are certain other types of photosensitivity conditions, like PMLE (polymorphous light eruption). You can read about this condition from the below link from The Cleveland Clinic. Photosensitivity and PMLE from the Cleveland Clinic: However, your condition actually sounds more like a "photoallergic eruption", where something you have applied on your face, (like an moisturizer, or even sunscreen, has caused your skin to have a reaction due to the effect of sunlight on a chemical that has been applied to the skin (often an ingredient in sunscreen, fragrances, cosmetics or antibiotic ointments) or ingested in a drug (often a prescription medicine). Common causes here are: sunscreens, fragrances, cosmetics, tetracycline antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and even some OTC NSAIDs drugs like Aleve and ibuprofen. The key here is that has to be something *currently* on your skin or something you've taken recently -- not something you had on your skin in the past. Good luck -- only a dermatologist could tell you for sure, but it sounds like something you're currently using on your skin or something you're taking internally which is causing a photoallergic reaction."

Why do people use benzoyl peroxide? I used it when I had acne and it made it so much worse. My skin became inflamed. I don't use it anymore and my acne healed without it. Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidant. It produces free radicals which damage your skin. It has an inflammatory effect.. It even messes with your DNA! Not to mention, it causes cancer. Don't people know how to do their research when putting chemcials on their face? It is all about the profit, though. lots of products are dangerous for you yet they are still being sold. anyway, this information is real. check the link. >
Tank Kitteh [: replied: "i used to use it. it actually helped me. it burned like a mother, and left my skin extremely dry, but eventually my skin got to the point where it acts pretty much immune, and so i switched. i had no idea about that, though. haha, i'm glad i switched in that case."

Pregnant with baby #1 replied: "I have never heard of any of that. Lots of things can cause cancer, in the right doses or from prolonged usage (maybe over several years). How can it affect your DNA? lol If Benzoyl peroxide were so harmful, it would not be on the market or so regularly prescribed. You do realize that it's in drug store products, right? There are young teens using those products so if they were harmful... Get the picture?"
