Has anyone experienced vomiting/nausea or other side effects with citalopram and if so how long did they last? Were these genuine side effects or do you think the anxiety/fear made them worse than they were?

Ali V replied: "i had absolutely violent headaches and extreme nausea. It was real and very bad. My doctor had told me to expect it but it was way worse than I thought. Good news is on day 14 they stopped suddenly. i was watching a tv show, lying on my bed trying not to throw up and in extreme pain from headache when it was like someone flicked a switch! It was that quick! My doctor said this has been reported lots of times, that they suddenly stop. Hang in there and wait it out if you can, its worth it, i feel myself again thanks to citalopram X"

tsopolly replied: "I currently take citalopram, and have not had any of those experiences, but maybe I just got lucky."

EdgeWitch replied: "I don't think you should be expected to put up with such derogatory side effects. I would advise you go back to the GP to ask for an alternative. Citalopram is part of a group of drugs perscribed for anxiety or depression, they will have others that may suit you better."

Rosy Cheeks replied: "I got the same as you but i did not throw up my doctor told me to split the tablet in half and take half in the morning and evening and i found it worked alot better, I didn't like it though so i changed to another tablet as i don't take them everyday just if i feel too emotional. If it feels too bad then you can change but they are the best at the moment to make you feel better however they are awaful to come off and make you feel pretty bad as my mate has recently found."

slmjacs replied: "I had nausea for the first week of taking it but it wore off after that."

what are the chances for a 105 pound-skinny male getting nausea/vomiting and/or diarrhea by taking Citalopram? how high are the chances?

Affy007 replied: "That's a serious side effect. You should call your doctor. Citalopram side effects Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: very stiff (rigid) muscles, high fever, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors, overactive reflexes; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, feeling unsteady, loss of coordination; or headache, trouble concentrating, memory problems, weakness, confusion, hallucinations, fainting, seizure, shallow breathing or breathing that stops."

Citalopram and nausea? Hi, I have been prescribed 20mg and started the tablets yesterday morning. Within an hour of taking it, I feel violently sick and slight headache. Will these side effects pass? I guess it will take a week, but a week is a long time when one feels like this. Thanks

Tony R replied: "Normal mate. Yes it will pass within your first 3 to 4 weeks."

xLoubieLoux replied: "Yeah its quite normal - and the side effects will pass once your body gets used to the medication If it doesnt pass or get worse, go back and see your doctor"

littlevix21 replied: "i have taken cilatropram myself on and off for about 5 years. when you start taking it you feel really nautious, but each day less so and by the fifth or so day its pretty much passed. one way to reduce the nausia it to lay still (not very practical) and sip on ginger tea. if you take it easy it will pass. ive always found that moving around a lot worsens it, but i get dizzyness at the same time, so i guess your symptoms may be slightly differant. good luck, and i hope your depression eases"

Bo P replied: "i would ditch that shit, if you dont feel like taking it the rest of your life. if you dont want to throw yourself out a window now you will when you try to withdraw from it..."

Be bop a boo replied: "It will take your body a few weeks to adjust to this medication so try and stick with it. You should also be aware that you must not just 'stop' taking this type of medication (anti-depressant), which Im sure your Doctor has discussed with you. If you feel that the nausea is just not easing after a few weeks (2-3) then please go back to your Doctor to discuss trying something else. There are MANY different anti-depressants and it can take alot of trail and error in finding the right one for you. I speak as a person who has been on and off anti-depressants and right through the mental health system for 30 years...Im also a Nurse. Good luck and I hope you start feeling abit better soon."

vinnieF replied: "Don't wait. Contact your GP or whoever prescribed the stuff and let them know what happened. Unless that was the reaction they were meant to induce (which I rather doubt), they are not doing the job they were meant to as far as you are concerned, and you need something different."

betster89 replied: "Yes... i have been on these tabs too. dont worry it will pass as your body gets used to it. i used to get awful headaches but you will be fine. :-)"

The Last Word replied: "those side-effects are quite common with Citalopram. They will pass. Just take Paracetamol for the headaches. Was on it for 3.5 years, until last July"

Did anyone experience nausea with the anti-depressant Citalopram? I have tried 2 anti-depressants so far. (Zoloft and Lexapro) Both times I had to stop taking them because I had experienced horrible nausea, (could not eat for 2 days). Now I'm on "Citalopram" and I'm worried I will experience the same problem for a third time. I haven't taken it yet though. Also, did any of you find it a helpful medication?? Since it's generic I was wondering if it works as well as the leading anti-depressants such as Welbutrin, Prozac, etc. Thanks

Amanda replied: "The brand name for citalopram is celexa. Celexa is similar to lexapro, but not identical. It is possible you may have nausea, but you may not. Try breaking the tablet in half for the first several days and only taking half to give your body a chance to adjust to the medication. This should lessen the side effects. Side effects like nausea etc will get better over time if you can tough it out for the first week or so. Celexa works as well as any of the other drugs (prozac, etc)... but even the best antidepressant doesnt work for everyone. It's just a matter of finding the one that works for you."

Julia M replied: "im on Lexapro right now. im also taking any nausea medication. ask your doctor if you can get any kind of anti nausea meds. you could also get sea sickness bands for your wrists. they help with nausea, i wear them all the time."

Grammar SS replied: "naseau is a normal reaction to Citalopram. But it should go away eventually."

Citalopram (celexa) what time of day is it best to take them? i have been prescribed Citalopram (celexa) 10mg but i have not yet taken it the reason is i have been feeling quite nauseaus these past few weeks and on the leaflet the side affects of Citalopram are nausea loss of sleep weakness dizziness the problem is i already have all these symptoms and i havent even taken the drugs yet! anyway my question is should i take thenm in the morning or night and should i leave it a ong while after/before eating b4 taking them p.s i have not taken them yet because i am afraid of nausea and vomiting

Pisces replied: "I take mine in the evening around 5pm.I started them at that time just incase they made me drowsy but they dont.If they make you drowsy after you take them then nights if not go to mornings.Make sure you take them at the same time everyday though."

THE ARABIAN STALLION replied: "U came to the wrong place dear.Dont ask these seriuos medical questions here...ASK UR DOCTOR.....this is the best answer :-)...Your health is no joke...Im a senior medical student."

sdg-FNP replied: "So long as you're not pregnant, you can go ahead and start them now. Celexa is actually somewhat sedating. So, I would take it before bedtime. Now, if you start vomiting, etc., then just stop it and get a different medication. Remember that the side effects listed are what the pharmacy and drug companies have to provide, no matter how many people in the study had it. I've prescribed it quite often, but never had anyone get sick on it. Well...yet. Best of luck!"

saffron h replied: "I take mine every morning at 8pm, at breakfast. you might be feeling anxious about taking them, thats why you have all these symptons, at first i sweat a lot at night and i had nightmares but now i feel great, hope they work for you."

tigger_1432 replied: "I myself am on Celexa and Wellbutrin. I take mine in the morning after eating something light like yogurt. It has the ability to cause drowsiness and nausea, although I have never experienced it. If drowsiness and nausea are an issue try taking it before bed with bread."

starburst80 replied: "Take it at night.. that way if you have any side effects they will occur while you are sleeping."

very_slightly_drunk replied: "i take them mid morning with a coffee, and a snack. i did feel sick for the first week or so, but now is no problem, so can take them any time. try to stick to the same time of day, as you will remeber them more easily. most people find the side effects fade off really quickly. good luck"

chantale 31 replied: "I'm on 40mg and my doctor and pharmasist recomended that its better taken in the morning..might be different for someone else..I've had NO side affects either.."

Vik V replied: "Celexa dosage: ADULTS The recommended starting dose of Celexa tablets or oral solution is 20 milligrams once a day. Dosage is usually increased to 40 milligrams once daily after at least a week has passed. Do not exceed 40 milligrams a day. For older adults and those who have liver problems, the recommended dose is 20 milligrams once a day."

In withdrawal symptoms of Citalopram, is it possible to have pain all over your body.? I am having so many differant pains radiating all over my body. I'm happy to have the symptom brain "zaps",dizziness, palpatations, and nausea to show up in my researce , BECAUSE I THOUGHT I WAS GOING CRAZY!!!!!!. I've had pain in my lower back , my shoulders, down my legs, in the lower part of my stomach. I hurt all over .

mschvs_65 replied: "Did you step down gradually? You should never quit taking Citalopram cold turkey. Your supposed to take 1/2 dose for 2 weeks to taper off, then for two more weeks 1/2 of that dose. That would be 1/4 of the original dose. If the dosage is too small to cut, then you would take it every other day for two weeks before stopping completely. It is too hard on your body to stop without stepping down. Did you doctor advise you to do this? If so, you need a different doctor. My son quit taking his Citalopram cold turkey without telling me, and he almost ended up in the psych ward for suicidal behavior. It is a serious drug, and should be weaned off carefully!"

ladidadi replied: "These kind of antidepressants have tons of withdrawal symptoms. I recently came off seroxat (paxil) and was really awful even though I came off gradually and i did have all kind of pains all over my body also. Probably best to tell your doctor just to be sure though and come off with their help. Then never take this sh*t again! I'm planning to never take any mental health meds again."

deb replied: "I have been on citalopram for four years and took myself off of it almost a week ago my stomach has been bothering me i am totally sick to my stomach. I got off of it because i have had rashes which no one could tell me why. They called it Granuloma Annulare i stopped taking it and rashes are going away. I just called my doctor waiting for a call back. I cannot sleep that good."

General Anxiety Disorder, nausea? I was diagnosed with GAD (General Anxiety Disorder) just about a year ago. I'm finding it hard to cope at the moment and feel sick almost 24/7. Is it normal to feel this sick. I've looked on lots of sites and they all mention nausea but they say usually when anxious but I have it all the time. I've had full blood tests done twice and they were all normal. Dr has pressed my stomach and lower abdomen and found nothing wrong. She says it's all down to stress. I have a major phobia of vomiting (emetaphobia) and I think this is making my GAD worse so in turn is making my sickness worse, it's a never ending circle. I'm on an anti nausea tablet which does help but don't like taking to many drugs. Have tried ginger capsules, charcoal, aloe vera etc and none of those have helped the nausea. Also tried Citalopram with no luck so not taking any meds at the mo. Does anyone have any tips on stopping the nausea? Sorry to go on

epik555 replied: "I'll usually drink 7 up or something nice and fizzy so it give my tummy something to calm it down but also I like the burps :) That's all I can say for nausea, or you could just vomit sometimes that really does help. And try to find ways to relax and calm yourself down. Like listen to music or take a nice bath. Try telling yourself that you're not sick so you shouldn't feel nausous you'll be ok."

Bella replied: "I used to feel nauseous and anxious when I was on the pill. I thought I had depression or anxiety because I always felt ill. If you are on the pill, try getting off of it. If you aren't on the pill, I would try drinking mineral water and eating bits of bread throughout the day. Also, you should talk to a different doctor because you current doctor hasn't been able to help"

KENNETH D replied: "The best thing to do is to consult your doctor aAIN AND IF YOU ARE GIVEN DIFFERENT MEDICATION TAKE IT. iF YOU HAVE A PHOBIA ABOUT VOMITING THEN THE DOCTOR WILL UNDERSTAND AND WILL HELP YOU OVER THIS PROBLEM. dO NOT GIVE UP."

Music Gal replied: "I understand that cycle. Things I did for my nausea (before I gave up and take 1/2 pill of Ativan when I need to): Vernor's Ginger Soda (specifically that brand) Plain hard pretzels Plain Cheerios Fresh water Have you actually GONE to a GI doctor to make sure there's nothing else going on? I have a whole laundry list of things I could tell you GI-wise that could cause persistent nausea because I was personally tested for every single one they could think of before they rested on the nausea-caused-by-anxiety determination. Good luck!"

Citalopram Nasty Side Effects? I have been taking Citalopram for 3 weeks now and I feel worse then I did before. I started taking them because of bad panic attacks which it has helped with, however my whole body just feels like it is falling apart I have the following side effects nausea muscle twitching nasty muscle aches pain in my back and hips tight chest dizziness Has anyone else had these symptoms and if so will they wear off Any help would be appreciated

Batfreak87 replied: "I'm on Citalopram and Mirtazapine (Anti-Depressant) and I do also get those symptoms but I am not sure whether it is due to the medication or anxiety as anxiety can cause all of the above. If you're aren't happy you can go back to your doctor and request a different medication, there are lots of other drugs used for treatment of anxiety, unfortunately the ones that really do work they don't readily prescribe because of their addictiveness. I've been on the medication for about 3 weeks also and I'm holding out hope for it."

akash k replied: "I’d like to let everyone know about the most important discovery of the century that is impacting the health of people in 49 countries already: Transfer Factors Transfer factors do not cure disease or kill germs. Our immune system protects us from germs, cancer and disease. Transfer factors modulate and educate the immune system. They can boost, strengthen, or suppress the immune system (in the case of autoimmune disease), but it goes far beyond these effects. According to renown medical specialists, such as Duane Townsend, M.D., Rob Robertson, M.D., and William Hennen, Ph.D., transfer factor is the most significant breakthrough in the health care industry in this century. Transfer factors are tiny molecules found in colostrums which provide "immune knowledge" from a mother's immune system to her baby used in recognizing and fighting outside threats. By transferring information from cell to cell, transfer factors serve as "teachers" to the new cells, ensuring a strong immune system capable of surviving, even thriving, in its new environment. Transfer factors are not species-specific and can therefore be extracted from any mammal and then are given to another mammal with the same efficacy. According to the American Autoimmune RelatedDiseases Association (www.AARDA.org) : “The term "autoimmune disease" refers to a varied group of more than 80 serious, chronic illnesses that involve almost every human organ system. It includes diseases of the nervous, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems as well as skin and other connective tissues, eyes blood, and blood vessel. In all of these diseases, the underlying problem is similar--the body's immune system becomes misdirected, attacking the very organs it was designed to protect.” The leading company in the world producing Transfer Factors is 4Life Research™, which has exclusive patents. 4Life™'s Transfer Factor™ naturally supports the body's immune system, communicating immune information more efficiently among the cells in the body, and ultimately enhancing the body's ability to withstand attacks on its health. Citalopram? i know i have posted about this before, but i am on Citalopram (one week in), and i am suffering nausea, i cannot eat, i am having nightmares, and i am extremely tired all the time. I feel withdrawn, i unplug my phone, i cannot face people, or to go out, but i am trying very hard. The good news is, the Panic Attacks i was suffering, are subsiding, and the doc this morning, told me, the nausea and fatigue is my medication, and it will pass. I am sticking with the meds, as i trust my doctor, but i do not feel like myself, i feel so down, and just want to be alone all the time, is this normal? I just want to feel normal again!

cleo the pussycat replied: "see my question about citalopram.... my dose has just been increased and i feel EXACTLY the same...constantly tired, dizzy, shaky....maybe see your GP and ask about other optons, what doseage are u taking??"

J B replied: "Give it (the medication) more time. The side effects should gradually go away. Remember though, the first dose your doctor puts you on may not make all of your symptoms go away so continue to work with your doctor to get your panic attacks under control. Only time will tell."

weeniewotsit replied: "Go to a different doctor for a second opinion as soon as possible. Various medications just don't suit certain people. I also take Citalopram, and I know if I had even ONE of those symptoms, I'd be getting a second opinion immediately."

Velvet replied: "Any change or start of meds will take roughly 2 weeks before you will feel any benefit, your body will need this time to adjust to the new meds, and I am sure you will settle down. In a very few rare case (my husband was one) a person can be very sensitive to medication, but you don't seem to be having really terrible side effects. You say you feel the panic attacks are subsiding, that's a thumbs up! :oD Stick with it , it took my hisband 6 years to find the right combination."

steffijayne replied: "This medication usually takes up to 4 weeks, before you have a positive effect from it,the side effects should have then calmed down alot,if not see your gp for an alternative medicene"

careman1958 replied: "from a citalopram user maybe you need to go back to your doc and get your dose change down i had a similar problem once i a lower dose i was okay after 3 weeks"

emme replied: "I am just in the process of coming off citalopram. it took me two weeks for my body to get used to it, i was ill and felt rubbish for that time. All anti depressents increase your bad thoughts and wants to commit suicide in the first 2 weeks. stick with it and read the instructions carefully. do as ur doc says and stick it out abit longer, itll all b fine xx"
