What wt. loss supplement can I take with the drug Levoxyl? I lost my thyroids and one parathyroid to cancer 5 years ago and take Levoxyl which works as my thyroid (to put it simply). What weight loss supplement on the market can I take with that drug, since they effect your metabolism? I need to lose about 40 lbs.

mamamugg replied: "As an RN...Upon rereading up on Levoxyl in my PDR...I would suggest ya' NOT attempt to take any weight loss supplement!!! To quote PDR..."Don't take with ANY other medicine without consulting your doctor or pharmacist" As "Levoxyl is a replacement for thyroid hormones lost due to deficiency". I would give the Levoxyl at least 6 month (Depending on ya' doctor, blood work, etc.) to see if the weight doesn't come off with this RX. Since Levoxyl does "Increase cell metabolism rate". Again, plz speak to ya' doctor, maybe this is not correct RX for ya'??? Without knowing all RXs, etc. ya' taking...As well as what other medical conditions exist...I wouldn't suggest trying anything without a doctor's orders!!! Ya' also mention having had thyroid cancer... ...CONGRATS on reaching the 5 year mark!!! If ya' still on any steroids, they will def' cause much bloating, hence, weight gain. By law, RNs can NOT diagnose...PLZ, see ya' doctor???"

jloertscher replied: "the problem with the majority of these weight loss products is that we just don't know the answers. They are considered 'food' by the FDA. That means they don't need to establish therapeutic dosing, safety standards, or determine if there any drug interactions. I have watched weight-loss products come and go for 18 years. And something I've observed about skeptics is that they are ALWAYS right. Diet+exercise = weight loss.......and it won't screw up your thyroid medication."

Can the thyroid drug, "Levoxyl," negatively effect the bones and teeth? I am a healthy, athletic, 24-year-old female and no longer have a thyroid. I had several goiters that were found when I was 16 years old. I took the radio-iodine pill that depleted the thyroid organ all-together. I now take 175mcg of Levoxyl everyday. My TSH levels are fine, but I am worried about the side effects of this drug. My mom has spinal stenosis and osteoporosis that have required surgery. I read somewhere that Levoxyl can cause these diseases, and I am already at risk because they are hereditary, so I am nervous. Also, here lately I have been having trouble with my teeth and cavities. I know this may sound crazy, but something is going on and I know it. I brush, floss, use ACT mouthwash everyday and my teeth are very cavity-prone, and I recently found out I'm grinding and clenching in my sleep something awful. I read somewhere that levoxyl can effect your hair, teeth, bones, skin, etc and was wondering if there could be a connection. Has anyone heard or experienced problems with their teeth and bones as a result of taking daily Levoxyl? Thanks in advance :)

Topper (Linda) replied: "Levoxyl is a synthetic form of the thyroid storage hormone T4. It does not cause osteoporosis. When given RAI to destroy the thyroid gland, and just as often when dealing with thyroidectomy, there is damage done to the parathyroid glands. The parathyroid's rest above the thyroid gland. When the are damaged, or removed, the body becomes deficient in calcitonin. Calcitonin allows the body to manage calcium levels in the blood. Permitting calcium to be removed from the blood and put back into the bones during the normal course of growth and repair of bone tissue. If there is insufficient amounts of calcitonin the body can no longer perform this function and bone density is decreased. The reason that the bone and teeth issues become more pronounced as the dosage of synthetic T4 increases (doesn't matter what brand, it's all the same synthetic form of T4) is that as the body's metabolic rate increases the inadequate maintenance of the bones is even more telling and the rate of bone loss increases. It has nothing to do with the synthetic T4 itself. To deal with this you need to be sure that your body has sufficient levels of calcitonin, blood calcium and vitamin D3. You also need to address your thyroid replacement and the testing to determine if your dose is adequate for your body's needs. If your doc is only testing TSH, and not bothering to test your thyroid hormone levels, well, no way to tell if your dose is adequate. Testing TSH alone does not show if enough of the synthetic T4 is processed to the point of entering the blood stream and it does not tell if your body is converting enough of the T4 hormone to the T3 hormone that your body uses to function. My suggestion, if you want to stay on top of this? Get the proper tests to determine how well you are doing on thyroid hormone replacement. That would be Free T4 and Free T3. Get your Calcitonin levels checked as well as Vitamin D3 and Calcium. Calcitonin is available as a synthetic replacement.. or, in my opinion, the better choice, dropping the synthetic T4 (especially since you have no thyroid gland, like me) changing over to natural thyroid (most common brand name is Armour Thyroid) It not only contains all the thyroid hormones, T4, T3, T2 and T1, it also contains calcitonin.. and all are in a form that is ready to use by the body."

stealthwind replied: "I also do not have a thyroid gland. I was taking synthroid (same as levoxyl) for 13 years, and it was dreadful. Yes, this type of T4 drug can affect bones and teeth...2 of the many listed side effects on patient product inserts used to be issues with bones and heart. This is the wrong type of thyroid replacement for a thyroidless human being! Even tho you no longer have a thyroid, your body still requires ALL the thyroid hormones (T4, T3, T2, T1, etc + calcitonin) in order to properly function and survive. A single hormone synthetic T4 drug simply can not supply all the thyroid hormones to the body. Know that T4 is turned into T3 (and other thyroid hormones) in the liver AND the "thyroid", but you don't have a thyroid anymore. The solution is to find a thyroid med that does have all the thyroid hormones in it. There is somethng called "desiccated porcine thyroid", brand names Armour, Naturethroid, Westhroid, Thyroid-S, etc...and it is considered a "thyroid gland in a pill". This is the proper thyroid med for thyroidless human beings, plus it contains calcitonin. This is a discussion group for thyroidless people: The Armour Thyroid web site: A site for thyroid patients by thyroid patients: It is quite important that you get on proper thyroid replacement so your body and health does not continue to degrade. If you haven't addressed the reason why your thyroid was removed in the first place, that will have to be addressed as well. The Yahoo thyroidess group has a ton of excellent information that I am very sure you can benefit from. I hope all this information helps I've been thyroidless since 1990, and healthy since 2005."
