Anyone NOT have PCOS and use metformin to get pregnant? I don't have PCOS, but I have ovarian cysts. The doc put me on metformin to help....conceive I guess. Have any of you used it? Did it work? Did you have PCOS? Anyone not have PCOS and still use metformin? Did you get pregnant?
Yeah, according to the doc, I have three cysts on my left and one on my right. But they aren't calling it PCOS. And I do have regular periods. That's why this is so frustrating for me. ;)
Cate replied: "I have never heard of anyone having cysts but not having PCOS. Are you sure you understood right??
Anyway, my GF conceived after the doc put her on Metformin. She didn't have regular periods and that helped. She had to use a small dose of chlomid but got pg on the first round. She don't have PCOS and she did get pg using the combination of the two.
Are your periods regular? He may have prescribed you that to regulate them.
Good luck."

I had a cycle the first time taking Metformin but afterwards all it gave me was nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. I was literally sick to my stomach with the meds. I have been wanting to get pregnant thats why my doc. put me on it. I have a son of 10 years old and wanting another....."
Has anyone used Metformin (or Glucopage) for your PCOS? I have PCOS and I am thinking about trying Metformin. I heard there were alot of side effects to it, and I was wondering if the side effects outweigh the benefits. Also, I wanted to see if their was any truth to the weight-loss benefits that coincided with it. Thanks! :-)
Caleb C replied: "I would say that there are always some pretty harsh side effects but this medication has a general side effect warning for the most part the benefits are greater than the side effects. but you do have a 50% chance of devolping Lactic acidosis has occurred most often in people whose kidneys were not working properly. Liver problems may also increase the risk of developing lactic acidosis. Stop taking metformin and call your doctor immediately if you experience a feeling of general discomfort or sickness; weakness; sore or aching muscles; trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness; unusual or unexplained stomach upset (after the initial stomach upset that may occur at the start of therapy with metformin); or the sudden development of a slow or irregular heartbeat. These may be signs of lactic acidosis"
Serious Side Effects of Metformin for PCOS use? My doctor put me on Metformin 500 mg 3 x daily. I actually have a normal blood sugar at 78. I've felt dizzy, had a headache, have passed out (almost fell asleep at the wheel last night).
I am not sure whether to stop this or go to an ER if this continues. She tried the pill to control the PCOS but it did not work. I also have a pituitary tumor.
I feel awful! Will this go away?
just me replied: "Get your doctor to refer you to an endocrinology practice. Endocrinologists specialize in the treatment of pituitary issues and can help you get the metformin right for your system. I had to do this when I went on metformin, and the Endocrinologist got me on the right dose for my body."
mlbaker123 replied: "Metformin is also used in Diabetics so it may be causing your Glucose level to bottom out. You need to talk to your doctor right away. He may need to decrease your dose."
Would you use Metformin if you have PCOS that isn't the insulin kind? Hi. I am maybe not asking the question correctly but would you use Metformin is you have the form of PCOS that you don't have insulin problems? Or would you just use clomid? Im going to the doctor in a couple weeks but i just wanted some more info before i went. Thanks.
THanks. My doctor has talked about putting me on Clomid the next time i come in but has never even mentioned Metformin so i was curious when i have heard people mention it
WilksGirl replied: "Metformin can regulate your period even if you don't have insulin issues. If you have an irregular cycle, your doctor may try to regulate for a few months first with metformin before jumping to anything stronger like clomid. This also depends on how long you have been trying to get pregnant. If it's been less than a year, then the chances they'll just put you on metformin for a while are pretty high. Unless you've been trying for 12 months or longer, many doctors are hesitant to put you on strong meds."
ladyblackboots replied: "metformin and clomid combined are probably the best solution if you have pcos. metformin doesn't taste very nice and can leave your mouth dry so make sure you rtake it with a full glass of water. metformin can help keep your weight down as well as help regulate your cycle. clomid helps you ovulate, which is something the metformin doesn' t do. so combined they should give you a regular cycle plus ovulation, which is what you need to conceive. best of luck xxxx"
NorthCarolinachicky replied: "There's probably a reason why your doctor didn't recommend Metformin-your insulin levels didn't require it. Taking Metformin without actually having glucose problems can lead to very low blood sugar and throw your cycle even more out of whack. Most PCOS patients who are on Metformin are usually on it for some type of insulin related issue. (Some may use it for thyroid as well) So, I would just use Clomid, unless your doctor suggests otherwise. Good luck!!"
Kris_is_a_mommy_to_be replied: "I also wondered the same thing but like a few of the girls on her said, it will help with keeping your weight down and so my doctor put me on Met even though I had no insulin problems. But I am thankful that they did I lost about 30lbs in alittle less than a year. I then started Clomid with it and became pregnant the second cycle of Clomid. So I would say go for it, if your doctor wants you to take it do so, It won't hurt you otherwise they wouldn't want you to take it. I also recommend that if you do get pregnant have them monitor your progesterone levels for the 1st trimester to make sure your pregnancy is going well, I stayed on the Met till I was 13 weeks, I was told it can help reduce the risk of misscarriage. So also ask the doctor about that. And mainly the best of luck to you.

PCOS women using Metformin- what is the likelyhood of ovulating? I was dx w/ PCOS at 18. All classic signs & symptoms. Was on BC for contraception & to regulate my non-existant menses. My gyn said I would need fertitily drugs in the future if I wanted a family. At 21, ended up pregnant like a month after I stopped my BC, figured I wouldnt get pregnant. My Dr. was surprised for a sec.
We're considering having another child. My question-What are the possibilites of this happening again? I have been off BC for a yr now (use condoms, slipped a few times). My Dr. put me on Metaformin 2 help w/ weightloss (helps w/ PCOS). Lost 40lbs(15 lbs away from ideal weight) But I've only had my period 2x in the past 6 mo (not PG). My other question-should I be ovulating? Does Metformin really help with ovulation? Im taking 500mg/day, does this dose sound about right? I dont know how bad on the scale Im w/ PCOS since I can have random periods & I did get PG. I want it 2 be a suprise again when I do get PG. Dont want to start on fert drugs just yet. Any suggestions
Also, I know I can always go back to by GYN, but im sure they are just going to put me on drugs right away. But I am hoping to get some suggestions, or opinions or thoughts from people who have been through something similar or know of anyone and would like to share their information or experiences. Thanks.
thedaddy replied: "my sister in law has pcos and was given both clomid and metforming which sadly did not help her improve her condition or achieve pregnancy.
You would be best to make an appointment to see your doctor and discuss your concerns with them. You have already managed to have one child so there is hope that you will be able to have another.
Congratulations on the weight loss
Good luck"
HIDY replied: "Your dose of Metformin may be too low. There are many cases that the proper dose of Met regulated periods for women with PCOS. Talk to your doctor."
sarah may replied: "Metformin isn't the best thing you can take to ovulate. Which you need to do in order to become prego. I have PCOS and was given metformin to "regulate" cycles/loose weight. Didn't work as well as I hoped. Go back to your doc and ask about Clomiphene. I say first time was a miracle given all your circumstances. It could happen again... chances are slim... We have been trying for over a year...
Good luck girl ;0)"
Heather C replied: "If you are considering having another child in the near future, I would probably go to the next step, whether that means increasing your met dose or considering clomid. If you have only had your period twice in the last 6 months, then you are clearly not ovulating regularly. 500 mg/day of Metformin is actually the lowest dose (usually referred to as the "starter dose") and should be increased if ovulation is not occurring. I was actually up to 800 mg/2x a day. A low carb diet (I know, YUK!) can also help you lose those last few pounds which, in itself, can induce ovulation. If you are not in a rush, you could try naturally for a few months while using ovulation predictor kits to tell you for sure. Most doctors like for their patients to use them anyway for a clear cut answer. You could also ask to be referred to a reproductive endocrinologist for more information on concieving naturally.
I was in the same boat that you are now and tried for a year, naturally, for my second child and nothing was happening! It turns out, during that year that I was off of BC, my ovaries were becoming increasingly cystic every month. Instead of menstruating, the cysts that were developing on my ovaries were progressively worsening my condition and the odds of my conceiving! I was so frustrated. Ultimately, it had gotten so much worse that I ended up having to undergo "ovarian drilling" laparoscopically and following up with metformin and clomid. I only had one period after the procedure before becoming pregnant the second month! I am now a proud mommy of a 15 month old little pistol! And I don't regret ANYthing that I had to do to get her!
PCOS is such a tricky syndrome because it can be so different for every woman. Unfortunately, with PCOS we can't always have our "little surprises" the way that we plan to. You really have to go as far with it as YOU are comfortable with. Only you can say when enough is enough...Best wishes!
P.S. If you do decide to try clomid MAKE SURE that you look up (and order) PRE SEED. Clomid tends to "dry you out" down there, counteracting your efforts, and this is a sperm friendly lubricant. You may also want to consider taking a baby aspirin every day to thin the lining of your uterus to make implantation easier. Hope this helps!"
I have pcos and using metformin for 2 months? my periods started on the 16 and ended on the 28 of SEP, and approx 13-14 days after i felt cramps in my abdominal. about 3 hours after it stopped, and my CM became less i had sex around that time,do u think i ovulated and what are my chances of becoming pregnant.
Lelani replied: "I'd like to know if you do become pregnant; I have pcos too and have wondered if I will ever be able to conceive"
Baby #1 on the way! replied: "I just want to give you and Lelani a little encouragement and let you know that it IS possible! I have PCOS (diagnosed in February of 2008) and was prescribed Metformin. I remember crying and being so worried that I'd never be able to conceive. It only took 5 months on the Metformin and in July of this year I got pregnant! My doctors both were surprised that I got pregnant so soon after being diagnosed and starting the Metformin.
Just keep taking your meds the way you are supposed to and stop worrying about if you'll get pregnant or not- you will eventually. I was taking 750 mg twice daily at first but that made me sick and my doc lowered my dose to 500 mg daily.
Good Luck- I know you'll get pregnant eventually!!!!
Oh, based on your symptoms, it does sound like you ovulated. I had the same symptoms with the CM. About 2 weeks later I thought I was about to start my period (because of the cramps) but it never came. Took the test and was *shocked* ,but very excited to see two pink lines. I'm due in April. ....Good Luck to you.!!!!! =)"
shanon z replied: "i am in the same boat i have been on metformin and have pcos i got my period on sep 19 it was very light more brown that red an it lated maybe 2 days but since then i have been getting like ovarie pain and cramping and my boobs nipples have been sore and the last 2 weeks i have had a lit of lotion like cm"
knicole122 replied: "I don't think you should worry too much. I also have PCOS and take Metformin. I'm getting married next year, and my boyfriend & I would love to have kids. I asked my doctor about this, and she should there is a great chance that I can get pregnant without any problems. As long as you are having your period every month, and have gotten healthy, you should be able to conceive. You can also buy an ovulation tester for relatively cheap to make sure that you ovulated. Although, I think most will say that if you have a period every month, that you are indeed ovulating. Good luck!!"
Rebecca C replied: "I just want to assure you that you certainly can fall pregnant with PCOS. The estimate is that 1 - 4 in 10 women have PCOS so you are not alone!
There are some wonderful natural supplements that aid in fertility, and in reducing your insulin resistance.
There are also some helpful medications.
Lose weight if needed. This has been shown to increase your fertility.
I don't wish to scare you, but there is an increased risk of miscarriage in women with PCOS, so make sure you also look after yourself post conception.
Goodluck!"
