Decadron and Prednisone causing chest pain and palpitations? I was taking 80 mg of Prednisone for 5 days (no weaning), and then 10 mg of Decadron for 2 days (again, no weaning), and tonight -- the first night off both medications -- I'm having chest pain and palpitations. Is this normal or dangerous? I'm otherwise pretty healthy (or at least as far as heart concerns go anyway), but my chest is in a lot of pain and I'm afraid that I'm going to have a heart attack or something! It's making me anxious too, which is only adding to the problems. Please help! I'm normal weight and in my late teens. I was on the steroids for asthma and airway swelling. I'm also taking Zanaflex for a spinal injury, which makes me drowsy -- that seems to slow my heart rate down, so would that be good to take or dangerous? Thank you so much for help A.S.A.P.!

Brian replied: "OK as a paramedic. Yes this is bad. You need to be weaned off of these drugs. 80mgs is a lot of Prednisone. Go see your Dr or go to the ER NOW. Palpitations are bad for your heart, they may be damaging your heart."

fisherwoman replied: "You better call 911, you are having reaction to the meds."

Chronic chest pain for 7 years? For about 6-7 years I have had a pain just to the right of my left nipple. It's a burning stabbing aching pressure pain. I've had multiple tests done including x-rays, EKG's, CT Scans, Endoscopys, and MRI's. The pain first came about when was 18, I was smoking marijuana and began to cough extremely hard. 20 minutes later I felt like I was having a heart attack. Before that I had no chest pains what so ever. The pain has remained and has taken over my life. The only trigger that makes the pain worse is smoking.(Yes I quit smoking). but the the pain still remains the same. I have tried many meds including prilosec, naproxen, vicodin, prednisone and nothing helps. I have had multiple doctors and no one can help me. I am at a dead end. What is causing this pain, where can i go for help. The only thing i have been diagnosed with is esophagitis.

Douglas B replied: "You have a pinched nerve on that muscle that goes with that rib. To release it take your finger or thumb and run it along the rib where the problem is. When you get close to the pain push in with your finger/thumb and hold but make the rest of your body relax like after a big exhale. In about forty seconds you should feel that muscle relax. Just make sure it's entirely relaxed before releasing your pressure."

Camellia replied: "It sounds like you get esophageal spasms. My aunt gets them and the first time she had one she thought she was having a heart attack. Luckily, her husband is a doctor and was able to figure out what it was. Here's a link to some information about it:"

Life is good!! replied: "I have been going through the same thing for about 3 years now. I just started having a sharp pain in my chest that would make me fear that I was having a heart attack. I began having these pains not long after my daughter was born. The pains were never from coughing, just bending over or moving certain ways. I went to the doctors...once to my family doctor and next to a heart doctor. The heart doctor did an EKG, stress test, and another test I"m not sure what the name of it was but it is an ultrasound on the chest. The doctor couldn't find anything wrong. He said that there are muscles in the chest that can be sore from lifting heavy objects or even coughing and can actually feel as if your having a heart attack. I did however find out that I have a leaky heart valve...but the doctor says that a lot of people have them and they never know it. Best of luck."

sokokl replied: "You could be dealing with something like a condition called costochondritis (an inflammation of the cartilage around the ribcage), but this is an example only. I would recommend getting another opinion a heart specialist if you haven't already to see what else they think could be going on."

Are these normal side effects after coming off PredniSONE? I'm 19 years old, and I've always been a healthy person. I've never really had any bad reactions to drugs, and no real health problems except a few broken bones in my life. I had really bad poison ivy. It was everywhere. They usually gave me a steroid cream when I had poison ivy in the past, but the doctor said I couldn't use the cream on the areas that the poison ivy was on. So he gave me PredniSONE. The dose he gave me was 6x10mg in the morning for 4 days, then 4x10 mg in the morning for 4 days, then 2x10 mg in the morning for 4 days. The first 2 days I was on it, my legs felt awful. I could barely walk to the bathroom, and my knees would sometimes just give out on me. It felt kinda like my legs were in a vice, especially the shins. The next few days were fine, except my legs cramped up on me a LOT when I went on my run. During the last 5 days or so on it, I had a lot of trouble sleeping, and got maybe an hour of sleep every day, until the weekend, when I slept all day and all night, except for waking up to eat and use the bathroom. I finished it last week monday, and the day after I finished it, my knees started popping every time I tried to go on my run. I stopped running for a while, and it's still getting worse. If I lie in bed, my knee starts pulsing, and it feels like my knee cap it grinding against something- I don't see how this could be happening since PredniSONE is used to treat arthritis, not cause it. Once or twice a day(for the past 3 days), my right knee gives out on me, and I have to sit there a while until I have the strength to get up again. My left knee feels like my right knee did 5 days ago. This morning, I woke up with chest pain, and I can feel my heart beat. I'm not TOO alarmed about this, because I researched that PredniSONE can cause acid reflux, but I've been off it for over a week, so if it's still hurting when I wake up tomorrow, I'm going to the University Med Clinic. One other side effect that I noticed: sometimes at night, when I'm laying in bed, my ear suddenly starts ringing. Then it goes away in a few minutes. Just thought I'd mention it too. Are these normal side effects? The things I research online seem very biased, because the entire page is usually people against PredniSONE. I need to know, because if they're normal, temporary side effects, I think I can tough it out for a few more days. But if they're serious side effects, I'll make an appointment with the Med Clinic tomorrow. Thanks for reading this, I know it's long, but I am really nervous about it, since I've never had any problems like this before.

PJ replied: "You should check with the doctor. Be sure to mention the change in your knees. Good luck."

Could a steroid cause extreme liver pain? I was diagnosed with tonsillitis and prescribed prednisone to reduce swelling about a week ago. Since I started taking the medicine I have been experiencing extreme pain on the right side of my chest below the rib cage. Could the medicine be affecting my liver?

melimarg_24 replied: "It could be gallbladder pains. I'd go to the doctor to get it checked out."

musclehedz replied: "No, unless you take an abnormal dosage. Which is not the case. Alcohol is more likely to cause the problem."

I have been started on Prednisone for headaches. I know it's used to treat it, but can it cause pleurisy? The neuro put me on 60mg for 2 days, 50 for 2 days, 40 for 2 days...all the way down to 10mg for 2 days...headaches are getting better, but am having what seems like pleurisy...pain in right side of my chest and shoulder, and neck, when i breathe in...why?

Chris A replied: "Prenisone should not cause pleurisy - infact it is an anitinflammatory It sounds like there is something else going on and you should call your Md and let them know what is going on"

Asthma Medications cause other symptoms? I have had asthma for 7 years. I am currently on Advair steriod inhaler (2puffs a day) Prednisone (3 pills a day) Albuterol for the Nebulizer (every4 hours) and Singular (at night - one pill) I have had severe asthma attacks the past week but now with these medications I can actually sleep the entire night. However, when i lay down, My heart starts hurting. then i get some chest pains. Despite the heart and the chest pains I can breathe well. Even my peak flow says so. Should I be seen for this? And if it ever gets super bad what should I do? Could it be merely side effects? should I wait it out....? 10 points to best answer..thanks can it really be a reaction to the albuterol?

myopiniononly1948 replied: "Hon, you need to ask your doctor all meds have side effects. I wouldn't play with this, see your doctor and get a real answer."

manda replied: "You may have developed a sensitivity to the Albuterol. That is what happened to me after having asthma for about a year. I could feel that my heart was hurting and one day it got really bad and my pulse started racing out of control (about 210-220 beats per minute). In the emergency room they told me that it can happen to some people and if you use Xoponex instead, it works just as well or even better than albuterol without the side effects. The problem with this medication is that most insurance companies won't cover it for the nebulizer until you have already had severe reaction to the albuterol, because the xoponex is much more expensive. Other signs I had were severe trembling, weakness in my arms and legs, chills, and loss of fine motor skills. I wish you the best of luck, and hopefully you will get this figured out before anything bad happens."

jean ann j replied: "Ask your doctor."

Brittany replied: "Yea i agree with the second common. It is very common to have a reaction to ALl the medicines you are taken. Breathing well is the intial goal, but the rest might be side effects. Call your doctor as soon as you can to make sure it is not severe."

Have you had an adverse reaction to Tetanus Vaccine? I need to know what is going on from others who have had the same experience - and what did you do to get help? I had a tetanus shot at the end of Sept. I did get sick (fever, sleepy, swelling and pain at shot site) and I didn't get better. Two weeks later I get itching and chest pains through to my back that lasted one hour the first day and two hours (maybe 3) the second day. Then the 3rd day the itching was more intense and my left eye swelled. Took Benadryl, saw Dr- got cortisone shot put on prednisone (made me more sick). Told it was more likely the antibiotic I took after the shot. (I believe it is tetanus vaccine) Relapsed 1 week later, got another long lasting steroid shot. On Benadryl and Zantac several times a day. I still itch! I have anxiety like feeling in chest. I have numbness or weakness sensation in arms and legs. Tight chest feeling, pressure in head.. can't sleep and afraid from not knowing what is happening. Tetanus vaccine can cause Guillain-barre, is this G-B?

slytheringrl29 replied: "You might have gotten a mild form of tetanus. Most vaccines are actually a weak or dead germs. A friend of mine had lock-jaw for months after getting a tetanus shot. Don't panic, but definately stay intouch with your doctor."

Could use a diagnosis...? Signs and Symptoms: -Reoccurring cases of atypical pneumonia that require not only 6 weeks of Levaquin 1000mg (sp?) and Azithromician (sp?) 750 mg taken simultaenously, but also require varying dosages of Prednisone (sp?) as well in order to clear. Frequently, I receive intramuscular injections of antibiotics twice a week during these periods. - Occasional bouts with something called Aspergillus fumigatus that causes persistent coughing, moderate chest pain, and breathlessness. These symptoms also do not respond to antibiotics. I used to think I just had a string of bad luck, but I have been consistently getting each of these for at least 10 years, every year around winter. I tend to think it might be something genetic because it's really the only thing that makes sense, but I did some research and none of it seemed to fit completely. Any help would be appreciated. Apparently Aspergillus is a fungus if that helps... As for the environmental relationship to the fungus, I have moved across country in the 10 year period this has been happening - and lived in different habitats ranging from the suburbs to a rural setting - so most of the doctors I've been to have ruled out my environment as a factor. As for the lack of fungicides, my doctors were uncomfortable tacking on additional medicine with the ones I was already taking, and they felt pneumonia was more of a threat to my health so they treated that instead.

kay_flood replied: "hmm, they put you on antibiotics and steroids, but no antifungals? I am not surprised things keep recurring, aspergillus is really hard to kill. Suggest you talk to a pulmonologist about treating the fungus."

keli.clayton replied: "It sounds as if you may be coming in contact with some sort of mold or other airborne toxin that invades your lungs. Aspergillus is a fungus found in places such as compost heaps, and haystacks. Damp, wet, dark kind of places. Check your environment, and keep looking for a doc that will help you."

sonicboom2885 replied: "Hey, im a med student and in microbio. Aspergillus Fumigatus it has immunity to most of the drugs which is why its hard to get rid of it. I would believe the source comes from things like Mold or Fungus in the house. I would check every nook n cranny you have to make sure thats not it...."

What is wrong with him? Post-pneumonia.? My dad spent one month in the hospital with h1n1/viral pneumonia. He originally went there for what his doctor told him was pleurisy. After four days right before discharge he went into some sort of relapse and they found he had viral pneumonia and tests later found he had H1N1. Now he is at home and he is having some complications. 1. He has a high heart rate. His heart rate at rest is anywhere from 98-105. When he was on oral prednesone his heart rate at rest would stay anywhere from 105-120 at rest. He finished his cycle yesterday Sept 05 2009. He has been on some sort of corticosteroid for the past 2 months so it's probably still in his system. When he just stands up and walks a few feet his heart rate jumps. When he is sitting to eat his heart rate maintains itself in the 120-140 range, usually doesn't surpass 140. He doesn't try to do much more because his heart rate will just increase and he cannot shower because once he did and it hopped to the 160s. 2. He has trouble defecating because of the pain that is caused when he goes. He is able to produce but it's just very painful. I think he has hemorrhoids. He does use some suppositories but I do not see their effectiveness. 3. He says his rectum feels like it is burning or like it is irritated. As well as his penis and testicles. He is sedentary for the majority of the day. 4. His diet is free of spices and grease; my mom makes sure of this. 5. He eats a lot but has a very picky appetite, he'll only eat what he wants. 6. He is 5'6, 220 pounds, and he is 48 years old. 7. He has mild shortness of breath and barely ever gets chest pain. 8. He is taking xopenex, lysinopril, mucinex and was on solumedrol at the hospital and on prednisone at home thru oral consumption. MY questions is what is wrong with him? We have been to the pulmonologist many times and he tells us that his pneumonia is still there and he is in much better condition than how he was at the hospital. Two cardiologists have told him that his heart is fine and is working correctly. He was on Level 3 respiratory aid with a mask with a huge bag on it. But the night before, thanks to God, they had to remove all that oxygen and put him back on the most basic machine. He is somewhat pale but I can see some color in his face. Any ideas of what it could be? He has had cancer, anemia, and HIV AIDS testing and they all are negative. His doctors say they don't know what is causing all this. I really hope it is the anti inflammatory steroids that he was on and his body reacting to it. He does have the 'moon face.' He has a pulse oximeter and it reads: Saturation: Anywhere from 93-97 Pulse: 98-140 [As mentioned above.] Please doctors on here give me some insight. He has a dry cough no production and doesn't really cough a whole lot throughout the day.

Maryanne replied: "...try...they answer all of your health related questions!"

versantly replied: "your dad needs to follow up with his pulmonologist."
