Princesstalufa replied: "It is only recommended to use herbal supplements (if they even work-studies of herbal supplements performed very much, so there is not a lot of evidence to rely on) if you have minor prostate enlargement. At about age 40, a man's prostate enlarges, due to an increase in the number of cells-benign prostatic hyperplasia-this is the most common cause. Of course, one should be checked to rule out prostate cancer as the underlying problem. Herbal medications that are supposed to help are Saw Palmetto, Red Clover, Beta-sitosterol, and Pygeum. However, since herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA, there is no quality control, and there are variances of the amount of the active ingredient contained in the supplement between brands. Often there is a lot less of the active ingredient than what is listed on the label-its a gamble, and you never really know what you are getting. Another prescription medication option is to take an alpha-blocker, such as Flomax, Uroxatral, Minipress, Hytrin, etc..they are in a different class of drugs than Proscar."

Procerin and it's ingredient of Saw Palmetto Berry? I've been on Procerin before, and it actually worked very well for me, coupled with Minoxidil. But my curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to know how the (natural) ingredient of Saw Palmetto Berry worked. I chatted to a few doctors, and a health food store owner and they didn't support the continued use of Saw Palmetto to treat hair loss, unless I had diagnosed prostate problems (which I don't).
My question is this. How does Saw Palmetto work and what effects does it have, long term?
Procerin says that their product is all natural, and it's without the messy side effects (associated with topical sprays, shampoos and creams). Not to mention I've heard Proscar is actually dangerous? (I would never take chemicals orally that would put me in danger to treat something as trivial as hair loss, but it's still important to me and I won't give up without some fight).
Anyone with natural medicine background or any guys that have been battling hair loss, I would like to hear from you.
I'm actually off all medications to treat hair loss until I have further information.... And as soon as I got off it I was back to square 1: Thinning on top and temple region.
:(
oldtimekid replied: "The health food store owner was exactly right.... Saw Palmetto is only listed as a Prostate support product which it does because it's rich in fatty acids and sterols.
Some people have theorized and tested over time what can help for baldness and hair loss.... unfortunately, nothing has been found that helps everyone. There are some people that may get direct benefits for hair growth from the fatty acids and sterols among other beneficial aspects naturally occurring in Saw Palmetto, though. I did a quick search on Yahoo, and there are some companies testing Saw Palmetto as a possible aid for hair loss because it has some similarities to a drug that is used for hair loss.... but I don't see anything that's been proven yet.
If Saw Palmetto is the primary ingredient in that product, I'd say give it a shot. If it doesn't work for your hair, it should help your Prostate (which is always good for aging men). Good luck!"
Why generic finasteride for hairloss not effective as Propecia? I started brand name Propecia 6 months ago and started to see noticeable hair grow within 3 months. I learned to cut the cheaper generic finasteride 5% to save money. I notice less sexual side effects on generic. After taking it for 2 months I started to notice hairloss again. It is now so obvious and there is no doubt it is not working.
They are a few FDA approved generic medications said to be the same, but only find out the difference after patient complains. I cut the pill in to 4 rather than 5 and taking it daily without missing a dose. So the dosage is definitely sufficient. I filled the prescription from Costco, so the pill should be good. It is a blue color pill with F9 on one side and the other side has a logo look like a big and a small C.
If this is the generic made in US or the one made in India? If anyone have the same experience? Can any expert confirm that the finasteride generic is 100% the same as brand name? What about Proscar? Thank you!!!
mdGreg C replied: "I don 't Know, but Think you Are Correct, Money?
EDIT: if I Remember Correctly, the Only Difference In Proscar and Propecia, is the Dose/Pill, Proscar is 5X (5 mg) that of Propecia, Whereas Propecia is 1 mg."
SZO replied: "There is no generic Propecia available legally in the US. I realize other countries may manufacture finasteride in 1mg strength, but Propecia is still under patent protection in much of the western world.
There is a generic finasteride available in 5mg strength — any pharmacy should have it, provided that your doctor prescribes you 5mg finasteride. Some patients cut the 5mg tablet into 1/4ths to save money. There may be problems in cutting down the pill into smaller pieces and the partial tablets will have the problem of hydrating with humidity so do not cut more than one at a time (every 4 days) and keep it in a sealed container. Be sure that the company that makes it is legit and you are getting what you are buying!"
