Avodart or Proscar side effect, Decreased Libido. How do you treat it? Can you take extra testosterone? My husband is on Avodart or Proscar so his sex drive has been really diminished. now according to the Avodart instructions it says "How Does Avodart Work? Avodart works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), thereby decreasing the amount of DHT in the body. Since DHT is responsible for enlarging the prostate, using Avodart to decrease DHT levels can treat an enlarged prostate. So wanted to know if he could take Testosterone supplements to pump up his sex drive again. But if the conversion of testosterone into DHT, is the cause for prostate inflamation, I'm not sure if he took extra Testosterone supplements/shots, if that would make his prostate bigger too? According to what I checked, it is not testosterone that causes the prostate to swell, but the DHT that testosterone is converted to. Anybody have any experiece with this and is this possible ? Viagra only gives men erections, it does not increase the libido, so that is not an option. He has a swollen prostate so his doctor put him on Avodart and Proscar, which appear to be working for his prostate, but it killed his sex drive. He has to keep taking the medication, but he was wondering if he could take Testosterone therapy to increase his sex drive, but we are not sure if that will negate the beneficial effects of the Avodart/ proscar he is taking? If avodart blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, then it shouldn't matter if you increase the overall testosterone in a man's body would it? I thought the Avodart is not to stop the production of testosterone, it's just to stop it from converting to DHT isnt it?

Andrew Allison Adams replied: "NO!!! the extra testosterone will only become extra dht, which will negate the effects of proscar"

claziano replied: "Very complicated situation, Suzy.. My advice would be to try testosterone replacement therapy. If you can afford it, complete hormone replacement therapy (including HGH). My feeling is that the added testosterone may help his libido while the proscar/avodart keeps the DHT from affecting his prostate... All you can do is try it and see if that works.. I think it will.."

How long does proscar sexual side effect take to wear off? I've taken 1mg for about a month but I just stopped because my erections are not as hard and I've been urinating more then usual, bladder muscles feel weak.Has anyone had same experience and if so did the side effects go away while you were on the medication.Still debating on whether I should stop or continue taking it.I know some meds need time to adjust to your body so theirs temporary side effect. Thanks for your answers in advance. Taking it for hair loss.

Chrys replied: "as long as you take it you will have side effects..."

Lauren replied: "i think you should talk to a doctor about it and see what they say. it could just be a blip and will work itself out. your erections might not be as hard because your not as excited? x"

glowingmoon4u replied: "http://health.yahoo.com/men-prostate/finasteride/healthwise--d00563a1.html#d00563a1-sideeffects I suggest talking to your doctor and ask if there is something else you can take. You are suffering from a few of the side effects."

fototag replied: "Proscar will prevent hair loss in men who are losing their hair as a result of too much DHT, which is a type of testosterone. (Do a Goggle on DHT). However if your hair loss is due to genetics Proscar will most likely not help you at all but it will prevent your body from converting testosterone into DHT, a more powerful type of testosterone and that will affect your erections. You can use Rogaine on your scalp and it will do the same thing to prevent DHT on your scalp instead of affecting your whole body but you should discuss this with your MD."

Has anyone really found a solution to balding? What solution has the least side effects? My doctor has given me proscar. Has anyone had success with it or do you have alternative suggestions?

JOHN F N replied: "There is an old hair raising way. Fright. Fright is known as a hair raising event."

gyps replied: "no cure dear.....its hereditary, u can either accept it and shave (sexy by the way) or have hair transplant (expensive by the way)"

studmuffin replied: "i been bald for so many yrs. now, that iam use to it.iam not going to put that junk on my head.i think its just a scam to get peoples money."

MailorderMaven replied: "It is safe. The most common side effects happen to between 2 and 8% of men. They are erectile disfunction and less libido (two separate effects.) If either of these side effects happens, it disappears when the patient stops taking Proscar. Other side effects are even more rare, like breast tenderness or a smaller amount of ejaculate."

Hair loss medication Proscar affecting voice? Hullo, I'm at the moment about to start taking Proscar (or Finastride ?) for hair loss prevention and am a bit worried about the potential side effects, apart from decreased sexual drive, will the altering of the DHT hormones also affect my voice??? oh i forgot to mention that I'm a singer as well which explains the concern of the voice

firestarter replied: "http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/pro1358.htm This article is helpful. Given that the usage is for benign hypertrophy of the prostate and the side effects include impotence, less ejaculate and decreased libido, are you really willing to give up sex for possible hair growth??? It may not affect your voice, but it also may not grow hair. There are other treatment modalities that are more appropriate for your needs. Discuss these options with your physician. Personally, I would rather have a hard bald man than a limp hairy man any day. Check into your options."

Ryan C replied: "The lowering of the hormones is slight. Which could affect your sex drive but not enough to affect your voice. There are also other options to consider as well. The new laser hair comb that was approved last week by the FDA. I might consider this as an alternative, if you think the side affects out weigh the benefit. Good Luck with your singing career"

BPH - Why should my dad take Avodart or Proscar? The side-effects seems similar, why should he select one over the other?

Mubz replied: "I've only had a brief look, but what you want to do, is see how effective the two drugs are and take into account the cost of both. In my brief look, the two drugs are different in that one drug inhibits 2 forms of an enzyme while the other inhibits one. Drug compaines and researchers (even Government agencies), do trials for drugs to see how effective they are. These trials are quite revealing, and different drugs perform differently, even among different populations. Of these drugs, it could appear that one is more effective than the other in perhaps Asians, whereas the opposite could be true for white people. In this case, it is worth doing a search for trials, to work out which of the two is the most beneficial (i.e. is likely to be more effective, less likely to have side effects). Very loosely, this is a form of evidence based medicine. A good place for these trials is the Cochrane Library, which is online and is an amazing resource for clinical trials."

Would prostate supplements help shrink enlarged prostate naturally ? Prescribed medication, such as Proscar, needs to be taken over a long period of time and would have side effects. Procedure like TUNA would have some risks and it needs to be repeated every 3 years. Natural herbal supplements seem to be the best choice to shrink enlarged prostate if they work.

Jan C replied: "This depends on your willingness to take the risk. I fell sure you know that alternative medicine has been used for many years and it it is so good, then we wouldn't need medical doctors."

The scrapbook King replied: "Hi the thing with natural herbs is that what might work for me wont work for u all to do with the DNA thing but if u can get a book called Help trough gods pharmacy its 1 of the best herbal books around or find a good herbalist and get the best advice but if u can get the book"

JustMe replied: "What worked really well for my brother was Sal Palmetto Plus. Key ingredients are: saw palmetto berry extract and pumpkin seed oil. Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions."

Eemzy no Steamzy replied: "I've heard steroids do the trick haha"

Princesstalufa replied: "It is only recommended to use herbal supplements (if they even work-studies of herbal supplements performed very much, so there is not a lot of evidence to rely on) if you have minor prostate enlargement. At about age 40, a man's prostate enlarges, due to an increase in the number of cells-benign prostatic hyperplasia-this is the most common cause. Of course, one should be checked to rule out prostate cancer as the underlying problem. Herbal medications that are supposed to help are Saw Palmetto, Red Clover, Beta-sitosterol, and Pygeum. However, since herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA, there is no quality control, and there are variances of the amount of the active ingredient contained in the supplement between brands. Often there is a lot less of the active ingredient than what is listed on the label-its a gamble, and you never really know what you are getting. Another prescription medication option is to take an alpha-blocker, such as Flomax, Uroxatral, Minipress, Hytrin, etc..they are in a different class of drugs than Proscar."

fretochose replied: "they work saw palmetto and zinc (25mg/day)"

Procerin and it's ingredient of Saw Palmetto Berry? I've been on Procerin before, and it actually worked very well for me, coupled with Minoxidil. But my curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to know how the (natural) ingredient of Saw Palmetto Berry worked. I chatted to a few doctors, and a health food store owner and they didn't support the continued use of Saw Palmetto to treat hair loss, unless I had diagnosed prostate problems (which I don't). My question is this. How does Saw Palmetto work and what effects does it have, long term? Procerin says that their product is all natural, and it's without the messy side effects (associated with topical sprays, shampoos and creams). Not to mention I've heard Proscar is actually dangerous? (I would never take chemicals orally that would put me in danger to treat something as trivial as hair loss, but it's still important to me and I won't give up without some fight). Anyone with natural medicine background or any guys that have been battling hair loss, I would like to hear from you. I'm actually off all medications to treat hair loss until I have further information.... And as soon as I got off it I was back to square 1: Thinning on top and temple region. :(

oldtimekid replied: "The health food store owner was exactly right.... Saw Palmetto is only listed as a Prostate support product which it does because it's rich in fatty acids and sterols. Some people have theorized and tested over time what can help for baldness and hair loss.... unfortunately, nothing has been found that helps everyone. There are some people that may get direct benefits for hair growth from the fatty acids and sterols among other beneficial aspects naturally occurring in Saw Palmetto, though. I did a quick search on Yahoo, and there are some companies testing Saw Palmetto as a possible aid for hair loss because it has some similarities to a drug that is used for hair loss.... but I don't see anything that's been proven yet. If Saw Palmetto is the primary ingredient in that product, I'd say give it a shot. If it doesn't work for your hair, it should help your Prostate (which is always good for aging men). Good luck!"

Why generic finasteride for hairloss not effective as Propecia? I started brand name Propecia 6 months ago and started to see noticeable hair grow within 3 months. I learned to cut the cheaper generic finasteride 5% to save money. I notice less sexual side effects on generic. After taking it for 2 months I started to notice hairloss again. It is now so obvious and there is no doubt it is not working. They are a few FDA approved generic medications said to be the same, but only find out the difference after patient complains. I cut the pill in to 4 rather than 5 and taking it daily without missing a dose. So the dosage is definitely sufficient. I filled the prescription from Costco, so the pill should be good. It is a blue color pill with F9 on one side and the other side has a logo look like a big and a small C. If this is the generic made in US or the one made in India? If anyone have the same experience? Can any expert confirm that the finasteride generic is 100% the same as brand name? What about Proscar? Thank you!!!

mdGreg C replied: "I don 't Know, but Think you Are Correct, Money? EDIT: if I Remember Correctly, the Only Difference In Proscar and Propecia, is the Dose/Pill, Proscar is 5X (5 mg) that of Propecia, Whereas Propecia is 1 mg."

SZO replied: "There is no generic Propecia available legally in the US. I realize other countries may manufacture finasteride in 1mg strength, but Propecia is still under patent protection in much of the western world. There is a generic finasteride available in 5mg strength — any pharmacy should have it, provided that your doctor prescribes you 5mg finasteride. Some patients cut the 5mg tablet into 1/4ths to save money. There may be problems in cutting down the pill into smaller pieces and the partial tablets will have the problem of hydrating with humidity so do not cut more than one at a time (every 4 days) and keep it in a sealed container. Be sure that the company that makes it is legit and you are getting what you are buying!"
