I know someone addicted to Somas Please help!? She gets a prescription of 90 in a month and she runs out about 2 wks before her refill is due, Im not sure how many she takes at a time and how many times but its horrible seeing her like this and when I ask her if she messed up on pills she tells me no shes "sick" i ask how many pills did she take and her usual answer is 3 sometimes 2. She has been like this for almost 2 years now. Shes very anti-social I have no idea if thats part of being addicted to somas but she used to be very social. She has has fibromayalgia for 12 years and this is the only pill she has been taking along with vicodene and depression meds and sleepy meds which they keep changing. Are there any alternatives? I have tried taking her pills away from her and tried talking to her about it but she claims she needs them to be able to do anything, she says she only takes one more than shes supposed to and that she cant live without them. I just read about methodone and I saw some pretty scary things. also shes over-weight and smokes cigarrettes like a train and BARELY eats, the doctor just told her what to eat and to start eating every 3 hours because her immune system is low and gave her vitamins to start taking.

I feel for her, it was a hard time for me but I did it. the symptoms lasted 2 weeks and i thought I was going to die but i made it and now i am better for the last 2 years."

My mother is abusing vicodin. What can I do about this? Friday my mother had an accident in her car. She fell out of her car while it was moving because she thought she heard a noise. She was so messed up on muscle relaxers, because she didn't have her vicodin. She takes more than she needs, her prescription doesn't last the whole 30 days. So, last friday while messed up on Soma she drove her self to work,and almost killed herself with her vehicle. Well, I think it was an intentional accident so she could go to the ER, and get more pain medication. They obligiged because she broke her foot when the vehicle rolled over her foot. This scares me because she tends to over medicate herself all the time. She has had accidents at home,and hurt herself. Her doctor keeps on prescribing, and she has the mentality that if a doctor says it's okay to take this stuff, and precribes it, there isn't a problem. I don't know what to do. She's always doped up, and I can't stand to see her this way. The rest of the family is choosing to ignore the issue.

As you said, so often problems like these get swept under the rug because it's much easier to ignore them than it is to actually deal with them. I don't know much about your Mother's personality, but I think you should confront her. That's the only solution really. If she doesn't even understand that she's got a problem, then she can't think she's doing anything wrong. Tell her how you feel, that you are in fear for her life. Explain to her that it's not normal for a person to cause themselves pain intentionally just to get some pills. Maybe talk to your family about doing an intervention. phillygirl984 replied: "I have been going through a similar situation. Today is my 18th day clean from percocet (it may not seem like a long time, but you have to start somewhere). I got hurt in January of 05 and was taking pain killers every day, with a few exceptions (I ran out too early and had to wait until my next Dr's visit). Speaking from experience, the only thing you can really do is to voice your opinion to your mom. You can tell her how you're worried about her well-being, and that you're scared she's really going to hurt herself (either by being too messed up and having another incident like the one you stated above, or do permanent damage to her body from taking too much) and that you don't want to see her ruin her life. Like they say: "You can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". You can try and influence her decison, but until she's really ready, and sees the situation as a problem, she's not going to stop. Check out to see if they have local NA meetings in your area. Just tell her you want her to see what it's about. The majority of people who abuse prescription pain medication were originally prescribed it for a legitimate reason. What happens is either they have to take more to ward off the pain because their body built up a tolerance, or they just like the feeling that the get from taking it and figure "If I feel high off this little bit, I'll feel even better by taking more." I started out on 3 Tylenol 3's a day, and ended up taking either 8 or 9 percocet daily, or if I ran out too soon, I would buy oxycontin off the street for $50 a pill (so I was spending between $40-50 a DAY). Nothing else mattered more than getting high. I would not pay my bills because if I had $100, I would take care of my habit first before anything else. My priorities were all out of whack. I was at a point where I couldn't get out of bed without taking something. I wouldn't go to work if I didn't have anything. My relationships suffered greatly. Things just get to a point where you wake up and realize "I need to do something". I thought that being sober was the worst thing in the world. And now I realize it's not that bad. Life if better when you can remember it. I got a little off track, but basically I'm saying that your mom isn't going to do anything until she's ready. Just let her know that you're there for her. You may not understand totally how she feels, but let her know that you're willing to listen. Tell her there are people who DO know how she feels, and they're there to help her (that's why I suggested the NA meetings). I wish you and your mom the best of luck. I hope this helped."

If that does not work try to talk to the school counciler, if your mom is addicted to pain meds she needs help and is NOT able to help herself. having trouble getting pain meds from my doc what should i do.? Be upfront and honest, and make sure they are listening. There is a difference between abusing pain medications and needing pain relief to get through your day...there are docs out there that specialize in pain management, it may be worth looking into."

Soma is one of the most abused muscle relaxers around. With the injury being 3 years old it is time to look at pain management. Responsible pain management. Not just a guy who is a candyman. Try going to an orthopedist and get the problem treated at the root. Or try acupuncture or chiropractic. Instead of covering up the problem with meds, get the basic problem treated."

My husband has two blown discs in his lower back (close to the coccyx) and he has tried Tylenol w/ codeine, vicodin, morphine, amongst therapy treatments such as seeing a chiropractor and using a tens device. The only thing and I'm dead serious when I say the ONLY thing that stops the pain completely is medical marijuana. We are lucky to live in California so we have access to the medical marijuana under prop. 215 and 420 (funny I know...). If you are concerned about your lungs or the smell it doesn't have to be smoked, it can be ingested or applied topically as well. Our local dispensary (yes, a store where a legal patient can walk in and purchase marijuana) carries lots of pastries, ice cream, beef jerky, capsules, tea, candy, and butter/cooking oil that all contain THC (the active ingredient in marijuana). They also have a salve which is cocoa butter mixed with tons of marijuana which can be rubbed on the skin and will allow the THC to be absorbed through the blood stream. This is good on exceptionally bad days when your muscles are super tense. I'm not sure what state you are in or what the laws are but I sure hope that you have safe access and are able to medicate with marijuana if you choose to. Good luck and stay pain free!!"

Car Accident left my neck a wreck? A year ago I was in a car accident. I was at a stop sign and a women about 90yrs old driving about 35mph hit my left driver side just behind the headlights and drug me out onto a main street. It really messed my neck up and now if I do anything to strenuous like, I play a lot of softball and volleyball, I pay dearly afterward, ie. headache, migrain, neck stiffness, it's awful. I have to take Soma and IB profen together in order to just function. Anyone have any suggestions, exercises, natural pills, anything I'll take it. I am very active and can not live like this.

Billie77 replied: "I suggest you see an acupuncturist for this injury. They have helped many people start leading normal lives after such a injury. My other suggestion would be to see a chiropractor. I don't think any pill is going to help this problem - you need medical attention. My number one suggestion is acupuncture."

my tests showed I have a bladder infection.? Now I am on Soma a muscle relaxant and Cipro - antibiotic. Heard bad things about Soma but my doctor told me to try and take at least one a day so it relieves the tenseness of my body from the pain in my back. I have started my darvocet again too cause the pain is so bad. Will the antibiotics help the pain and lessen the light headedness once the infection is gone? I am a mess.......

Keisha replied: "Once the antibiotic is taken in completion, then you should feel better. The muscle relaxant should help with the discomfort from the urges to go. Since you are light headed from the mixture of medications, consult your physician or pharmacist to ensure that those medications can be taken together and not some sort of drug interaction. Also if the lightheadedness is not a drug interaction and just a side effect. then talk to your physician about changing your medication to something that you can tolerate more easily."

Is more than 4 Soma per day safe? I was recently prescribed darvocet and Soma for a chronic muscle pain condition. I used to take 4 per day, the max daily recommended dose. But when I saw my doctor he said that if needed I could take up to 6. I looked online and in the literature and info out there, it says that the max dose per day of Soma [Carisoprodol] is 4. My muscles really hurt bad and would like to take more if it is safe. But obviously don't want to kill myself and realize that sometimes doctors mess up. I called the pharmacy and they just say follow your dr's orders, so not much help. I was wondering if anyone has experience with soma and if so, if you've ever taken or been prescribed more than 4 per day? Or even better, hopefully a nurse or doctor on here if that's not hoping too much. thanks again everyone. i've posted a lot of questions lately and have gotten so many great and helpful answers. The only reason i am questioning the doctor's order is because the prescription has been being filled for over a year on refills, so the prescription instructions are the same on the bottle [take 4 a day as needed for pain]. but he verbally told me otherwise. and doctors are human and make mistakes. they are busy and may have made a mistake. i was hoping to hear from someone that has taken it, or knows otherwise. also, i tried calling the doctor this morning but he is on vacation for 2 weeks.

What happens if I fail a UA on probation? I have just recently been put on probation in Travis county Texas. The first time I saw my officer, I told him I would not pee clean and he gave me and extra month, but I have probation on Tuesday and I will pee dirty for marijuana, xanax,valium and somas. My boyfriend beat me and I went crazy and messed up. What will happen to me? will he take me to jail right on the spot? can he give me another chance if I tell him what happened with my boyfriend? Also, I was arrested a week ago for driving with a suspended license but I am on disability and the day I was supposed to go get it, my check came late and they were closed so I had to wait til Monday so they took me to jail, in a different county close by. What will happen. All the info you can give possible will be greatful. I wont touch another drug...I know it was a mistake....please give me all the information you can and as fast as possible. It was in travis county, in Austin, Texas. Thank you.

Something Else replied: "First off, drink as much cranberry juice as you can before you drop. It will get rid of most of that stuff in 48 hours. I work with high school kids on probation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They drop dirty all the time, and a lot of times nothing happens to them. Other times it's enough to get them locked up. So it depends on the judge, your probation officer, etc. Most of them are willing to overlook occasional mistakes as long as you're not showing a pattern of defying your probation. If I had to guess, I would bet your probation will be extended but you won't serve any time. That's been my experience, but again, I live in Milwaukee, where they tend to be pretty forgiving of drug offenses."

tkquestion replied: "You can use "I made a mistake, it won't happen again" excuse for so many times. You made a mistake and got arrested, and was put on probation. The judge gave you a chance to prove yourself, you can maintain yourself. The probation officer took a pity on you and gave you an extra months. He should not have done this in the first place, but he did. Then, you are now saying you will not test clean again. You also said you were arrested again for suspended license. I'm sorry, no matter what your reasons were for making this last string of errors, it WAS your chance and you blew it completely. You can try explaining to your probation officer and you should, but there is very little chance he will take easy on you this time. My suggestion to you is, to leave your boyfriend who beats you, expect the worst when you see your probation officer, and if it comes out in your favor, promise to yourself, you will never do this again, under ANY circumstances. The fact your boyfriend beat you and the fact you are on disability has nothing to do with you taking drugs again and driving on suspended license. You made a decision to do these things."

Sounds like your honest with him and he can deal well with that honesty. Let him know your story and hopefully he will understand. PO's are there to work with you. They are not against you. So be honest with him and be sincere. Let him know you messed up again. Don't wait till you need to go in and see him, but call him up and tell him what happened. It would also help if you would reach out for treatment. Do this on your own and don't wait for your PO to place you there. From what you have told, I think , he will give you another chance, if you are honest to him. It is required that you let your PO know if you fall down. Call him, before he finds out on his own. Being your on Disability, do you realize that once your placed in a confinement, your Disability will stop? In other words, if you don't walk the straight and narrow and your PO has to put you in Jail , or a half way house, your Disability will stop, until you get out. You have lots to loose. So shape up. Ya say your not gonna touch another drug. Famous last words. I hope you do what you say. Do it for yourself."
